It's 3-ethylcyclopentanol. Can you see how or shall I (try to) explain?

Me too  if I ever won millions on the lottery, I'd buy myself a decent sized island and some giraffes/zebras/monkeys to go with it :awesome: That'd be great! Oooh damn, what's the sea one?

Her voice was so magical. Why haven't I met her yet?

It was! Aww :frown: I hope you get to one day! She seems like a genuinely lovely person too, and also humble which is rare for artists these days!

Well you better hurry, as 48 hours is exactly the deadline . Any reason why you're sending it so late?

Sure.

Firstly, you can tell it's cyclic very quickly and as it isn't a benzene ring but has an -OH group attached, it must be an alcohol. It has 5 carbons in its cyclic structure. The -OH is always on carbon 1 in a cyclic alcohol, so you start counting from there. The ethyl group is attached to the third carbon relative to the -OH group (you want to get the smallest number), so it's 3-ethylcylcopentanol.

You know it's an ethyl group rather than a methyl group because where it branches, there are two carbons rather than just one (as you can tell from the skeletal structure). If it was just one carbon on the branch (i.e. just one line), then it'd be a methyl group. I think this covers what you asked in the PM?

Regarding your second question in the PM, could you quickly draw what you put in your exam?

I hope this makes sense, I'm not that good at explaining. :colondollar:

Why the 3?

It's on the third carbon relative to the -OH (the carbon the -OH is on is carbon 1)
