Professions where being gay is a no-no Watch

We seem to think that gay people are equal, like everyone else, etc. but there still appear to be professions where being gay is practically prohibited - at least until you are close to retirement.

I'm thinking:

- Most male sports: footballer, rugby player, boxer, etc.
- Actors (primarily action)
- Boy-band members (especially when they initially form)
- Cabinet ministers
etc.

Is it not wrong that in such professions there is pressure and, possibly coercion, to refrain from being gay?

Male sports stars are the main one. Football's such a prehistoric mess.

Boyband members? A lot have come out as gay and been supported, haven't they?

A position in the Nazi party or a job in a Southern Alabama church probably wouldn't be a good idea

Hairdressing?
Don't agree with boy band as some dude from union J has recently came out.
Nike also had that sponsor a gay athlete thing, however I think it is their team mates/ opponents/ culture that are in sports that make people struggle to come out. I highly doubt anyone watching would care though.

Actors and boy-bands, don't make me laugh. There are absolute tonnes of gay people there!

Cabinet ministers and sports people....there is still a stigma attached which is slowly changing, no doubt. Especially among their peers. But the GP don't really care.

I don't really understand the point you're making. Most gay men you can't really tell are gay, which leads me to think you're referring to camp gay men, but then again they're no less likely to get a role in an action film than a camp straight man? Although, there are gay men in action films (John Glover, Ian McKellen) and there are characters in TV shows/films being played by gay men who you wouldn't 'stereotypically' cast to a gay man (Wentworth Miller in Prison Break for example).

Also, I had to LOL at you saying it's practically prohibited being gay in a boy-band, most of them live more stereotypical gay lives than the average gay man.

Being gay at an oil drilling rig won't be something you'd want to admit to.

I concur. I mainly audition for parts where it's okay for the char to be black and not macho/butch.

One of the P.E. teachers at my school is a lesbian (a lot of people have said so but I'm not really sure). She gets on well with most of the girls though so I'm not sure what to think.

I'd have to disagree about actors. Sure, if you want to play macho roles (Stallone et al) then it would be a disadvantage, but there are plenty of openly gay actors and actresses out there.

And regarding boy-bands, it seems obligatory to have at least one gay member - they're just not allowed to admit it.

Close to the disbanding/retirement of the band (see Boyzone and Westlife) but most certainly not initially/for a while.

Do you really think One Direction's management/publicists would be all fine and dandy if one of them said 'I am gay and I don't want to have to hide it'?

Well I did say 'action'. I just think Liam Hemsworth and Henry Cavill would most certainly be encouraged or even coerced to hide that were gay if that were the case.

I don't think any profession should exclude/make it awkward for gay people. Even if they're working with children, it doesn't mean they're automatically a paedo and like all boys.

Can you name at least a handful of young gay actors in leading blockbuster roles in recent times?

All of those are terrible examples and have no premises. There is no law which says there can't be gay cabinet ministers simply because there is none. Similarly:

Gareth Thomas - full back for Wales International Rugby Team
Orlando Cruz - Puerto Rican boxer who's won the majority of his fights
George Takei - Captain Sulu for Star Trek, also big LGBT advocate
And boy bands are pretty self explanatory.

The only reason you've made this thread is the same reason you make any other thread relating to homosexuality - you ask stupid, almost rhetorical, questions in a bid to get people to scramble to say otherwise simply to prove the normality of homosexuality, yet you complain about homosexuality not being socially accepted. Make up your mind.

I imagine their publicist would love it.
