2-bromopropane to 1,2-dibromoethane

A synthesis is given by:

2-bromopropane - A - 1,2-dibromoethane

Name A, and name the mechanism, reagent and condition for each reaction.

I have no idea how to go about getting rid of that carbon :/

There are standard methods for losing a carbon or gaining a carbon from a chain. The classic is to use the Hoffman degradation reaction. This involves heating an amide with bromine in the presence of strong base.

However, as this would make your transformation several steps I suggest that there is a misprint in the question ...

But if it was 1,2-dibromopropane, then there wouldn't be a need for A would there??

Yes, there would.

If it were 1,2-dibromopropane then A would be propene.
