What's Illustration like?

Anyone study illustration?
I want to apply here next year. If you can give me any of your experiences with the course I'd be so grateful. Whats Plymouth (as a place) like?

Hi there!
I'm currently a second year on the BA illustration course at the uni (as opposed to plymouth college of art) and i love the course! Everyone is really friendly throughout the years and we often socialise between years. the tutors are really helpful and have a genuine interest in your work. You get your own desk and space which gets bigger as you go up the years which is really helpful as you can really make your space your own. There are excellent print making facilities which are the best out of all the unis that i visited with antique presses. the illustration studios are open from 7-midnight. You can explore whatever you want to do, and youre not pressured to do traditional illustration, you can be really creative with your ideas, but at the same time if you want to do traditional illustration then thats fine too. youre expected in the studio from 10am-4.30 pm mon-friday. in first year you are registered and if you dont attend you could fail the module. its a very hands on course but i find (as i am paying the 9000 pound fees as opposed to the current 3rd years) that you get alot for the amount youre paying. we also got a bursury out of our fees which paid for our trip to venice last year, and its paying for us to go to berlin this year.
i really would recommend this course!
i love plymouth as a place too, everything is on your doorstep, i have had to get a bus once in 2 years!
if you have anymore questions just ask

I am so glad you have put this up! I am looking to do illustration next year but I have no idea where to go and what you have said ticks all the boxes! I am just wondering how much written work there is on the course compared to the practical work?

its mainly practical work, but in first year you have one essay module so you have a lecture/tutorials once a week, i think you write 2 1500 word essays in the year, in second year i think its the same, but the word amount goes up and third year i think you will have the choice to do a normal dissertation which is i think 6000/8000 words, an extended dissertation which is 10000 words (i think) or an extra studio module and a 2000 word report. you also keep something called a visual research journal, which is a kind of 'sketchbook' which accompanies the writing. theres really not that much written work and you get alot of support with it. the tutors are very understanding that we are all very visual people so writing is often not peoples strong points. but it does help you learn about all the different kinds of illustration that there is out there

Hey ive also applied for Plymouth and have an interview! This is actually my second time of applying after putting it as an insurance last year, going to Anglia Ruskin to study illustration and animation and realising I don't want to do animation! So this is attempt number two.... Fingers crossed!
