In this case you'd use 加油。加油 is used whenever you want to offer someone encouragement :smile:

It's the whole so called 'filler object' thing Mandarin has. It can be quite confusing at first

Yeah, unless it's something specific like a magazine or a newspaper, in which case you drop 书 and replace it with the appropriate noun.

The same thing happens with a lot of nouns actually, e.g.

开车 kāichē to drive (lit. to drive a car)
吃饭 chīfàn to eat (lit. to eat cooked rice)
看书 kànshū to read (lit. to read a book)
写字 xie3zì to write (lit. to write characters)
说话 shuōhuà to speak, talk (lit. to speak speech)

吃 means to eat, whereas 饭 means cooked rice, or a meal. So you could say 我喜欢吃饭 wo3 xi3huan chīfàn I like eating :biggrin:

欢 is the second character in 喜欢 which means to like.

Don't keep translating things character by character, as there are many words made up of more than one character in Mandarin

It's the same word, just in traditional characters instead of simplified

Oh yeah, I see the similarities :yep:

It's hard keeping a balance between speaking and writing. How do people fit numerous tones in a sentence... Especially when they speak so fast.
