OP raises a few good points in an otherwise bizarre post. Hate the Sunday standstill especially.

Maybe but calling it backwards compared to Russia Greece or Albania is stupid...

I'm a British citizen (as has been my entire family for generations), and I can't wait to leave. Yeah, you did read that. I can't wait to leave and go to somewhere that may even slightly represent human progress. This country is still living in Victorian times. The obsession with the monarchy, the pathetic 'moralistic' inclinations of Middle Englanders (i.e. bigotry, backwardness, and intolerance), the pervasive obsession with WWII and Empire, Cameron's porn filters, the absurd drug laws, the fact that pubs are essentially forced to close before midnight (compare to the rest of Europe), the fact that the London Underground closes at midnight, the democratic deficit in government, the fact that the world seems to come to a standstill just because it's a Sunday (wah, tradition!). Ultimately, I refuse to allow my extortionate taxes to be spent on maintaining this ridiculous state of affairs. Sadly, I'm being forced to want to leave the country of my birth because of it. Why is Britain such a backward country?

The Sunday trading laws need protecting. It's nice having a no work day. In Scotland there are no such laws and it's an absolute disaster

Where exactly did the OP mention Russia, Greece or Albania?

I've already gone into it elsewhere on here but there's plenty I don't miss now that I live in Denmark. There are various things that Denmark is equally rubbish at, but many things that it is light years ahead in when compared to the UK.

As mentioned in my last post, I can think of few shops where I live that are closed on a Sunday now. Even the local supermarket, in a small town, only shuts one day a year (Christmas Day).

Yes, when family are working or at school.

Shops are only open silly hours and the transport is Rubbish. I live in Birmingham.

Loads of things are traditional that aren't right

Plus not everyone is Christian which is where that comes from. If you're Jewish, Saturday is the rest day

I'm not Christian, but it would be impractical to change the rest day.

It wouldn't. Rather than change it, get rid of it and have different people have different rest day rather than having Sunday as the standardised rest day.

Why does the state need to choose a rest day? Why have one? Why not just give people 2 days off on different days???

Not if you're doing a job that would involve working on Sundays? Fancy doing a 9 to 5 job on Sunday for no extra pay?

Those countries were ment to be examples...

Two words. Margaret Thatcher.

Irish people left in their droves for Britain in the fifties all the way upto the eighties and those who made it home, such as my uncle from Leitrim who was a builder there for years in the sixties and seventies, and me da in the late eighties/early nineties say when Thatcher was through with it, 'twas actually a worse and even more backward place to live than Ireland. Now since the 1960s and the death of the honest hooring gunmen who were replaced by the corrrupt cute hooring gunmen Ireland has been a corrupt shytehole and the only progress we have made is reducing the power of the cult sect and locking up a few priests and the general discrediting of the church and the rise in skepticism towards the Church even by Catholics.

I was in Britain a few times and lived in Europe twice so knew Brits when out there. I think British people genuinely expect more than neoliberal horsethievery though, and that's the only difference. Emigration and disillusionment as well as incredible cynicism are longheld norms in a lot of countries, including ourselves, definitely Spain from what my mates who have lived there tell us, and I'm guessing in Italy too judging by their own recent history and the fact Spain and Italy have the highest emigration levels after Ireland.

A lot of British people live in France and really like it there. I really liked it there, a bit of corruption or just enough to get you a bigger refund from the doc than you paid out but not enough that you have to play the system to get your entitlements like you do in Ireland. And every low paid worker/student/pensioner is entitled to cheap affordable social housing(for young people it's a scale of dorms and flats but rent can be as cheap as 150 euro a month before your CAF/rent allowance) and on top of that most people except millionaires qualify for public healthcare, and as I said the rent allowance and the entire country went mental when I was there over some minor change to pensions. In Ireland only pensioners defend themselves, but everybody was out to protect the old people. Mind you in Ireland pensioners vote for the same auld hoors no matter what their grandkids have to put up with(ie the dole for people my age is 100 euro and a pension and various allowances are well over double that while young people don't even qualify for fuel allowance). Germany is also bumping up its welfare state and bringing in new minimum and living wage levels. I ain't no europhile, but you could do worse than France and Germany if you have a language.

Britain has recovered but though ye all dodged the bullet unlike us re the euro there is an ongoing massive devaluation of the pound and a bond bubble with yours and the yanks bonds at centurion records. Even if you are doing okay, maybe you should think of a getaway plan sooner rather than later. That's what I'm doing here anyways-I have me usual seasonal handy number lined up and hoping to go to Germany next summer.

Oh OP so young and stupid. Wait until you DO leave and then you realize how many problems other countries have. Honestly...the tube closes at midnight and everything comes to a standstill on Sunday? (Where!?). What a load of horse bollox.
I know he didn't but I used them as examples.

It's nice to all have one together. Only ***** would want to deprive people of their day off anyway

The state doesn't choose a rest day. This is a Christian country and traditionally the day of rest for Christians is Sunday. In Muslim countries its Friday.

It's nice to have a choice. Only a **** would want to force me to work specific days that don't fit in

And as any reasonable liberal country should be secular, we should sort that out

So? There's nothing "weird" about some people wanting to work or have things open on a weekend
