accidentally looked up something illegal ... help!

Hey

I accidentally searched for something illegal on line without knowing the term that I searched was actually illegal. (so stupid of me)

Anyway, I was using a proxy (I always use one), I am so worried in case I am going to get in trouble with the police or something :frown:. Please help!

Thanks

What did you search for?
To be honest unless there's a good reason for the police to be interested in you already it's EXTREMELY unlikely that they will give a damn what you were looking at on the internet. I'm pretty sure that they have to get legal authorisation to actually acquire your physical location from your IP anyway - either way unless you're regularly looking at child porn (even then they're likely to invest their energy more in finding the people responsible for uploading it) or searching for 'terrorism for dummies' on Amazon then I'm pretty sure that you're ok.

you could report the website you accessed: https://www.iwf.org.uk/ if it was porn for instance

Well firstly, you're not using a proxy now, so you don't always use a proxy.

Secondly, using a proxy to Google something you 'didn't know was illegal' insults our intelligence.

Thirdly, using Google to search for anything illegal is that bad it's funny. Have a look at TOR or something... That's what all the kids are doing these days, no?

EDIT: If you're truly worried, have a look at DBAN (Google it).

I took an educated guess my friend. You need cookies in order to remain logged in on his forum, you don't have cookies enabled when working via proxy. You could have maybe gotten away with it if you'd said a VPN!

Seriously though - take heed of the advice...

It depends  what have you looked at? Children? Buying drugs/guns? Beastiality? Hitmen? The list could go on and on...

Of course it won't hurt to 'wipe' your computer; if doing so, I seriously recommend DBAN, not because of 'illegal content' but because when it's done right, it's about the safest, free way to 'wipe your computer' without the guy you sell your computer to next recovering your files.

A slang word for one of the terms above... I was completely oblivious as to what it meant! :frown:

Does wiping the hard drive wipe the operating system from it an everything? Do proxies not make you anonymous when surfing the net?
