Top EU official says we want EU superstate where with no national governments

Poll

Should the UK be part of an EU superstate

EU Vice President says under the system national governments would become like current local councils and that it would 'have supremacy over national governments' and 'would supersede the sovereignty of MPs in the House of Commons'.

To top it off she says this plan will be the best weapon against Eurosceptics, clearly delusional such a plan will only encourage euroscepticism in the UK

Any bets for when the war will break out, Germany tried this twice before it didn't end well

By 'voters' I hope that means citizens, and not politicans will get the vote here. Not that anyone would be braindead enough to agree with this.

Federalist hyperbole about a United States is the opposite of helpful to the majority of countries who want a reformed EU to work better," said a European diplomat.

The EU is already sovereign when over member states in most parts

Maybe the EU isn't that fussed whether or not Britain wants to be a part of such a superstate provided the vast majority of other EU members do? 'Oh **** we've managed from Cyrpus to St Malo but it's nothing without the UK' is not a likely sentiment.

ffs - have you not noticed the European elections are happening in a few months?

Almost everyone over 18 gets to vote (prisoners in the UK excluded) gets a vote.

The vote is referenced in the article.
These European officials just say these things because they know how much it pisses off the English. It's like successful internet trolling.

Thats why its better that the EU is closer integrated, Europe is a great continent when it is open, united and linked through trade and common purpose. We don't want to go back to the days of fighting each other.

Makes sense. A 'United States of Europe' would be a superpower with the largest, most advanced economy and army in the world.

There will be no war. We are already the first generation ever to experience a time without armed conflicts in Europe, thanks to the existence of the EU.

What the United States of Europe? Doesn't sound particularly appealing to anyone.

I hope they respect cultural diversity; i'd hate to see a common language imposed on all Europeans.

Interesting.

I'd like to know what the other 6 Vice-Presidents of the European Commission think about this. Aside from that, the view of one person isn't really a big deal.

The Eurozone nations are certainly moving towards a federation but the UK is a long way away.

For the UK to even consider joining such a federation there would need to be a common army (with common foreign policy), common currency (with common debt) and most importantly the European Parliament must have supremacy and the EU commission if it acts as a government must be made of elected MEP's.

If memory serves their are 11 of the 28 nations who have stated a desire to form a full federation but there's no evidence that it would be forced on the rest.

you are forgetting the troubles in Russia/Georgia, Franco in Spain, IRA bombings, ETA bombings, Turkey invading Cyprus, not to even mention the Baklans all of which has happened since WW2,

My favourite line from the article- 'We assume Britain's leaving the EU so we don't even bother thinking about British sensitivities at the moment'

Thank god for that

Probably because the EU can only just function using billions of UK money without us they will never balance the books

Neither of those countries were in the EU when the conflicts arose (IRA is a terrorist organisation, proscribed in the UK under the Terrorism Act 2000). My point is that countries within the EU would never resort to war with other member states. This is one of the greatest achievements of the EU as "for over six decades it contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe", which is exactly why it won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.
