Almost 1 in 10 babies in England are Muslims

Almost a tenth of babies and toddlers in England and Wales are Muslim, census figures show

Some 317,952 children aged under five, or 9.1 percent, were registered as being Muslim in the 2011 census, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show.

As a measure of how the religious demographics of England and Wales are changing, the figure is nearly double the 4.8 percent of the whole population who are Muslim, while fewer than one in 200 people aged over 85 are Muslim.

It is also an 80 percent increase on the 176,264 Muslim under-fives recorded in the 2001 census.

No baby is Muslim.

How can "children under five" even have a religion? I remember I used to ask my Mum what I was supposed to put whenever a form asked and she'd always answer "Christian", despite the fact that I've never actually been a Christian and really nor has she.
Babies are atheist by birth.

Are you going to inform their parents of that then? Rainbow secular atheist la-la land doesn't actually exist, you know.

I presume that's 10% of the people who decided to answer at all right? Because most non-moronic parents wouldn't give an answer since they'd know that labeling a child by a theological system that they don't understand is ridiculous.

Huh? Of course, they would say my boy is a Christian, Muslim or whatever. My words would fall on deaf ears.
Babies growing up in the 2020s will be too busy driving their hover-scooters and messaging their friends on their Google Glass 5S's to be caring about religion. Besides, Hindu climate refugees from India will dilute their numbers.
One of the funniest thread titles I've read in a long time, thanks.

Yes, I bet they just slid out of the womb wearing a burka too.
We should aspire to get to a level where it is 1/1000.
ah TSR

how you have changed

/sarcasm
Yay for religion!
"Oh the times they are a changing" I was very surprised to see this in the Independent. Media outlets on the left normally suppress anything that they think may give succour to those on the right, whether is a true story or not. Hence it looking like the Daily Mail etc must be making this stuff up, if it was true other papers and the BBC would be running it wouldn't they?

there's no such thing as a "muslim baby", or a "christian baby" - I hate that concept of labelling a child, assuming that the parent is going to try and indoctrinate them them into their religion without them getting any choice in the matter. if there is such a thing as a muslim child, then how is there no such a thing as a "socialist child" or a "fascist child"? utterly silly to suggest such a thing, except when it's religion, because our culture is still practically spineless for religion
