It depends on what your plans for the future are. Unless you're determined to work as a biomedical scientist in the NHS, an unaccredited course would be preferable, as it gives you far more flexibility in module choices. This would benefit you if you were planning to continue onto more specialised studies at Masters or PhD level.

Have you tried arranging voluntary work in a Lab?

Apparently some people on my course have managed to do that.....they usually help you out with our portfolio once you've volunteered for a while.

yup, I signed up to a local lab work recruitment agency which finds short-term work experience placements. They had no luck either. With regards to the NHS, I rang up my local hospital trust and they pretty much shunned at the idea of speaking about a placement and referred me to the website :sigh:

It's a band 5 position, so they start at approximately £20,000 a year.

It's a pay structure, which puts you in a band according to your job.

Band 7 is a lab manager, as far as I know. Not sure about band 8. Check the NHS jobs website.

Those who done their Biomedical dissertations. If you done a lab based project, did your supervisor guide you on what techniques you should use etc or do they just expect you to do everything yourself?

Hi there, this seems like a nice, friendly thread.

I'm currently in my final year of Biomedical Science in London, and want to apply for Graduate Entry Medicine next year, and providing I get an offer, I would then have a gap year between studies.

I could get a job as an HCA or do something very part time for 6-12 months, but I wondered if I could get a job as a Biomedical Scientist or something similar, using my experience and knowledge gained, and earn around 20k?

Would this be possible for just a year? Or would I need to undertake something like a 3 year training course as a graduate? My course is IBMS approved.
