I found this page on a thread. You can find a complete list of TSRians who have applied for speech and language therapy, alongside their replies here...

Hello lovely people,

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and I wish my fellow SLT wannabes a wonderful New Year.

I got word from QMU before Christmas informing me that I have gained a place to study the PgDip/MSc up there this coming August which is a nice start and will hopefully be followed with more good news from other universities (fingers crossed).

Regarding Newcastle interviews, I wish everyone the best of luck for the coming week. How are people set re: Case Presentations? Are you going into great depth etc? Not having the use of visual aids is going to make things a bit more difficult but I understand that it makes sense for the sake of brevity. I am quite nervous though. Whoever is in on Wednesday with me, Be kind.

Looking forward to putting some faces to usernames.

Dani

Congrats on your offer for QMU, I'm almost finished the MSc so if you have any questions then feel free to private message me!

As for the MSc/PGDip question that someone asked, I've been told by most of the SLTs that I've worked with that the MSc is a huge advantage when it comes to job hunting. I'm almost finished my 2 year PGDip and I will be going straight into the MSc thesis after summer. It only costs an additional £900 at qmu (only!) and we have been told it should be around 4 months part-time or 8 months full-time. I'm going for full time as I have a child and I think working+thesis+child will be a bit much for me!!

Good luck with your applications!

Interestingly I have not heard/found the MSc makes people more employable at all, at least for first NQP roles. The huge majority from my cohort are employed (over 3/4 I would say) since graduating in July and obviously haven't completed the MSc yet. Employers I've spoken to are just looking for the qualification and HPC registration that the PGDip alone provides.

I imagine later for specialist roles it will be more of a factor and provide an edge but otherwise, in London at least, there seems little difference in employability!

I'm thinking of applying for this MSc after my degree. Is a joint degree in Linguistics an acceptable degree to have for this course?

hiya,

i did a degree in French and German and was offered an interview from Essex. I actually think linguistics is even more relevant than modern languages, so yes it is an acceptable degree definitely.

If i were you i would start looking into volunteering etc already, I left it all until after i had graduated and had a bit of a stress!

Thank you very much.

I've done a year looking after a child with autism and ADHA, and looking after someone with Ménière's disease for six months, but I've still got loads more planned!

What kind of stuff did you do?

Oh brilliant! Sounds like some great experience. I only did volunteering with Stroke Association, and quite a bit of shadowing. But I have done a lot of teaching English as a second language.

Are you gonna take a gap year and apply for 2015/16 intake?

Absolutely! Most applicants' first degrees are in either Linguistics or Psychology. I did Linguistics and English Language joint honours myself and have had the good luck to have been offered interviews for all of the four universities I applied to.

(Sadly Reading and Essex invited me to interview on the same day I have a tough choice to make if Essex are unwilling to let me reschedule!)

I'm doing Comparative Literature and Linguistics, so I hope that will be ok. Also, what happens if your degree programme doesn't offer a dissertation module? Will I be extremely disadvantaged?

My programme did offer a dissertation module (two, in fact), but I chose not to do one. It doesn't seem to have affected my chances much so I wouldn't worry too much!

Thank you <3 I don't really know what Comparative Literature entails tbh! I'm sure any subject is fine as long as one half is Linguistics, but I think the best thing to do is to work out the ways in which the subject matter or the skills you've learned on the course (Linguistics side included) are relevant to Speech and Language Therapy and discuss them briefly in your application.

Has anyone heard from City? Do they leave it until the last week? I don't know whether it's good news or bad that I haven't heard anything! My application was complete with references by 7th November!

I havent heard from City yet either and a few other people I work with have not heard yet either...dont know about you but the wait is driving me crazy!!!
Reply 295
That's good to know that I am not the only one waiting! When did you complete your application with references by Prettybow? The suspense is killing me! I just want to know!
Reply 296
It now says on the City website that we will "be advised of the outcome on Feb 7th". So a couple more weeks to wait, I'm afraid!

hi everyone,

i've been reading a bit of this thread and am really thankful this exists! i graduated recently and applied for intake this year, i really didn't realize how competitive this course really is and how hard it is to gain a place..
but good luck to everyone, especially to all applied to City. I spoke to them, and admissions said you should hear by Feb 7th, but can hear back before then.

:-)

Wishing everyone the best of luck especially those that have applied to City! Hopefully we will hear back from them soon!
Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum. I have only applied to City, as it is the only London based Uni that takes final year undergraduates so I guess all my eggs are in one basket. I am becoming very impatient waiting and wish they would let us know sooner! Good luck everyone.
