This seems like a cool thing to do that a lot of people are doing. I get asked questions constantly about the topic title, so to heck with it. Here goes.

Some background info on me:

I'm 29 years old.
I'm a software developer.
I work with Facebook as an Ethical Hacker.
I spent 12 months in prison.
Studied 2 years at uni (Software Engineering).

Ask me anything at all. I'll answer with complete honesty.

Is this guy you?

Did you drop the soap?
which uni did you go to?

That is me yes. I posted that before I went to prison, because I had an incline that eventually I would be caught and wanted to know what it was like in prison. At the time of posting that a lot of people I was dealing with were being arrested.

Oh hang on, that isn't me ha ha! I thought you was referring to a different post on Quora. I actually did ask a similar question. I only read the URL, it wasn't until I clicked on it that I realised. How bloody mad!

Wolverhampton, and then Stafford.
Do you think that your life would've been much different if it wasn't for you going to prison?

Showers were cubicles so it didn't matter if you dropped the soap. They're a bit like the showers at a gym. I had Imperial Leather shower gel I purchased from the canteen anyway so it didn't matter lol.

I feel it may have been worse. I was getting into a lot of illegal activities online and I think I only would have went deeper and deeper until I got caught up in more serious stuff. I know for certain if I didn't get caught I'd still be hacking. I started to write viruses and malware and was getting into that, I was planning to set up a botnet.

I learnt a lot in prison. A lot about myself. I planned a lot of legit business ideas in prison, some I've implemented and are slowly growing. I learnt a lot about my friends, family and my girlfriend. I spent a lot of time reading, something I'd never done before. So I think prison for me was an excellent learning experience.

Do you think that it has been of a large detriment to your career prospects?

I'm a negative thinker. I lack confidence in my abilities anyway, even though others often tell me I'm very smart. So I think my mindset does more damage to my career prospects than my record. I run online businesses from home because my mental health problems stop me from working with other people. It's going very well for me, so I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

A lot of people say a criminal record for computer hacking can be a good thing to the right employers. I'm not sure though.

Having a criminal record only shows an error of your past. It is up to the individual to correct themselves. I can see why it may look 'better' to an employer; they want someone that has the ability to bypass the complex barriers that most can't. Let me say, congratulations as although you may have made a mistake in the past, it seems to me that you have become a better person and are leading a happy life. Although, I'm basing that fully on what you say:biggrin:

Thanks for your story - it's an extremely interesting read and its pretty clear you're not a troll. May I ask, where do your parents feature in your life? How did they react and how much do they know about you?

I don't mind them knowing what I'm up to but I'd rather them not have a complete chain of where I've been and so on. Of course, they only use data that suits them but I still wouldn't want all of that information out there. Of course, with location based data you're putting yourself at other risks as well which can become realities offline. Also, you're unlikely to know who this data is being sold on to and third parties often do try and buy it and if you've accidentally agreed to let them do so then your data can get into the hands of people who use it for other purposes etc.

Snapchat is putting together a complete chain of events that tell a story of your life if you're a frequent user.

1. Photograph in Spain by the sea
2. Photograph in London Luton Airport
3. Photograph in Oxford
4. Another photograph in Oxford

From that small amount of data somebody can already build a picture of things about you - I could make a guess that you went on holiday to Spain, flew into LLA and most likely out of that airport (maybe not) and that you most likely live or study in Oxford. Thats just a small sample of data being analysed. Imagine if it was a big amount? Location adds a real time and offline risk as well.

Pretty amazing what you can do with BI/Data Mining tools huh?

If you had a large table of data for a large set of people imagine what kind of correlations you could find.

What I find more amazing is the amount of people totally oblivious to it. Its both amazing and frightening.
Are you still being monitored?
What a fascinating thread! By far the most interesting AMA I've come across. So how much money are you making off your home business? C++, C or JAVA?
