Yup... well I did Admaths so I pretty much did C1 + C2. I haven't done calculus in my course atm so I'll need to revise that. Differentiating with negative power I didn't know before but shouldn't take long to learn...

I'll have to learn M1 for summer though, not sure how long that'll take...

Differentiation with a negative power is the same. Just multiply by co efficient and subtract one from power.

M1 shouldn't take too long!

Also, you might find this interesting.

3=0, and I can show you the proof.

Want to see it?

Go on :tongue:

I do, but does it involve any one of these?

I have lots of other work I'd like to keep on top of though, doing extra reading for chemistry :tongue:

so:

x2+x+1=0x^2+x+1=0
x+1+1x=0x+1+\frac{1}{x}=0
x=11xx=-1-\frac{1}{x}
Sub into first line
x211x+1=0x^2-1-\frac{1}{x}+1=0
x31=0x^3-1=0
x3=1x^3=1
x=1x=1
Sub into first line
1+1+1=01+1+1=0
3=03=0

Can you figure out what's going on? :P

tl; dr probably not

another one is:

let
x=2x=2
x2=4x^2=4
x=±2x=\pm{2}
2=2-2=2

:lol: how'd you get from:

x = -1 - (1/x)

To

x^2 - 1 - (1/x) + 1 = 0

?

Sub it back in, I'll edit the post to make it clearer

So why do these things make 'sense'? When they're not?

Because you can't re arrange an equation and resub in?

that's what I thought when I was shown this :lol:

Hint: How many solutions does a linear equation have?
A quadratic?
A cubic?

1, 2, 3 :tongue:

1, 2, 3 :tongue:

So when we turned the quadratic into a cubic, we gave it another root.
This is known as a 'spurious' root.

spurious
ˈspjʊərɪəs/
adjective

1.
not being what it purports to be; false or fake.

If you do maths at uni I think you'll learn about them :tongue:
I'm doing: Music Technology (Edexcel), Psychology (Edexcel), Religious Studies (Ethics & Philosophy) (Edexcel) and Sociology (AQA).

Whenever we see the spurious in lessons my maths teacher sings illuminate the spurious accentuate the positive...

Yup, unfortunately :frown::biggrin:

About the UK sutton trust summer camp this year, I'm not sure what they mean by transport is payed for to and from the summer school i.e the Universities. Is that actually from my country Wales to England/Scotland as that seems a little unlikely/hard to organise if for example there were two of us going to one of the Unis from one college... Anyone know anything?

I'm not too sure tbf but what I do know is that I've applied to the scheme too - I hope so though :smile:
