Has anyone from a 'non-target' Uni managed to get a banking summer internship???

Hi
I've applied to quite a few different banks (bulge bracket and small, mainly for Sales or Trading internships) and a couple of asset management firms and have been decline by about two thirds of them so far.
Just wondering if anyone has management to get an interview or anything really whose from a non-target uni? (i.e not top 5 or 6)
Btw i'm from a Russell Group Uni but not a 'target uni' and studying Economics with a high 2.1 last year so i thought i might have a bit of a chance of at least getting a phone interview or something. The same has happened to other people on my course I know, no one has really got anything (yet anyway).
Anyone in a similar situation managed to get anything?
Cheers

How many rejected you at online testing stage?
What are your Extra Curricular activities like?
Do you have any related work experiences?
Do you have anything to make you stand out? Like achievements or events you have attended?

Also, a high 2.1 doesnt mean anything. In the app form you can only put 2.1 or 1st anyway and everyone applies with at least a 2.1. Thats the minimum requirement.

Do any banks actively come to your university?

Well don't think u can tell if they rejected me from online tests or from looking at my application but about 6. Haven't had a phone interview or anything.

I'm in the Finance and Trading society and play for the society's football team.

Not directly related like a Spring Week etc but i've done jobs which need some of the same attributes (like confidence, social skills, dealing with pressure etc) as someone would in a Sales role at a bank i.e worked in a call centre, high pressured door-to-door sales, Sales advisor in phone shop but nothing actually in the financial services industry.

Yh i no a 2.1 is the minimum but what i mean is, is that it's not a grade that should hold me back, but yh obviously won't make me stand out at all.

If u don't mind me asking, have u had any success with internship applications? (just assumed u might be applying if you're posting here)

No banks don't come to our uni, like i said its a Russell Group but not a target uni.

Still in the chase but I have two internships under my belt. Could be the way your CV is structured? Have it looked at.

No offense but if you don't come from top 6 and have no relevant work experience or many EC's, you can't really expect to get anything

Nobody can "expect" to get anything. Going to a top uni in no way entitles anybody to an internship, it is far from a done deal.

I know at least three people from Uni of Birmingham who got a Goldman internships last year, one of which turned into a grad job, also know a lad who has an internship at Blackrock. Whilst target Unis are obviously a thing, its not a complete block.

I'm talking about getting an interview.
Someone from Loughborough got a grad placement in Goldman Sachs. So it's possible.

I aren't sure. I know alot of graduates get fairly decent places. They're ranked 7th for Finance related subjects, consistent top 10. That's where I'm intending to study, either there or City.. haven't yet decided between the offers. There's alot more to getting graduate placements than just the university.. it's about wowing the prospective employers.

Yeah for sure. I haven't heard anything back from CASS yet either... That's sort of my first choice if I get an offer. There's obviously more to it than where you go though...

Good move, broaden your horizon. A lot of the modules within Cass for their different courses are fairly similar.

Yeah, that's true. They are all pretty similar, I suppose you choose what you think you'd rather 'specialise' in. I hope I get an offer from CASS :crossedf:

They've taken so long, I sort of rather lost hope. Regardless.. It was on equal par with Loughborough (which I've been made a conditional) for me so either way  makes the decision process less of a burden. Do CASS normally take so long to apply or is it just us?

Nice, congrats on the Loughborough offer - I'm pretty sure they're semi-target uni. I have no clue, when did you submit your application?
