The term "tonned" is largely an invention of the beauty/health industry - an acceptable way of saying "losing fat and gaining muscle mass" (because women commonly don't like the thought of gaining muscle).

Partly. It means to have visible muscle, although usually not bodybuilder-esque. You get toned by having/gaining some muscle and/or losing fat.

Toned means having low body fat percentage so your muscles are more defined.

Some people have very little muscle mass so they will just look skinnier the leaner they get until there's just their skeleton and skin at, say, 5% body fat. Whereas bodybuilders just have bulges of muscle at 5% body fat (which is generally unsustainable either way).
Toned = Skinny, no muscle but such low bodyfat that you have abs.
Ripped = Muscular, low bodyfat, seperation, striations. Looking thick. Tight. Vascular.
lean. toned body looks good on pics. not necessarily correlate with power. the same way big dudes, 280lbs, cant even benchpress 100kg.

To me, toned is having small to average sized muscles which are defined. You have to have low body fat so there is muscle definition
