St George's University, Grenada. Pre-Med

Hi guys,

firstly i apologise if I’ve posted this thread in completely the wrong place, new to this forum and after some advice. Also i apologise for the length of the post....

At the grand old age of 21 I've finally decided to get some direction in life, this being said I’ve decided I’d like to pursue a career in medicine.

The only qualifications i currently have are GCSE's; A in English Language, B in English Literature, A in History, B in Maths, B in Sciences, B in ICT, C in Art (not a wise choice admittedly...) and a D in French (not appreciated by teachers when you have a French spelt name). Due to a successful family business (that crashed severely in the recession, leaving no chance for me to be involved) and an insatiable desire to travel, i never wanted to go to college. The idea of college still doesn’t appeal to me, however i will use it if so needed.

I’ve found a few options that relate to my situation; access to higher education course which my local college offers. It’s a one year course in partnership with Brighton/Sussex medical school that offers an intensive year of studying to educate students in basic medical science. A lot of successful students are offered a place at Brighton medical school to study a Degree in medicine.

However because I’ve always travelled, i quickly looked at international studying. A lot of countries including America, Australia etc. will not offer any sort of education to a student who hasn’t at least taken A levels. St Georges University of Grenada specialises in degrees of Medicine and Vetenairy degrees. The medical degrees are recognised in England, prominent American states and many other countries across the world.

Interestingly enough they offer e a "premedical program" which you can apply for with just a "high school" education. It’s a 3 year course if you apply only with GCSE's and after the 3rd year, presuming you pass the test they will enrol you in the 1st year of a 4 year Medical Degree program, which like i said before is internationally accepted for the most part.

I’d just like some opinions regarding the University and in specific if anyone has had any experience with the Pre-Med program.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there I'm thinking of applying to the Premedical course too for the August 2014 start. Still waiting to see if I can get into the UK for medicine, fingers crossed I will hear from one of my choices in a few weeks but this would be a great backup plan. Have you already applied for it? I've only done A levels (A*AAAA) no degree so hoping to get into the 3rd year of the pre-med program. Going to start filling it in this week and see what happens. Best of luck with your application

Lol I just found that out by calling them and this route is now a no-go for me. I knew the place sounded too good to be true, the caveat is there are no student loans as such and unless you can convince the bank to help, you're looking at around 30k+ a year, so 5 years of learning there - roughly 150 grand...unfortunately I'm not a millionaire so the UK is my only realistic option. Good luck if you can afford it though

I called them up - ... they were being wishy washy with the price when l asked them how much would it be ... Apparently they are "scholarship" which every should be entitled to and these go by a case to case basis - you think l was taken for a fool or what ? :colondollar:

Haha that doesn't surprise me, I have heard about the scholarships given to a lot of students, I guess it doesn't hurt to apply and see what sort of scholarships will be given, it would really affect my decision at least but it feels like such a long shot. Have you applied for medicine in the UK this cycle?

I'm from London, applied for medicine undergraduate for 2014 entry, are you studying or on a gap year ?

Hey guys! I am looking for the mobile/phone numbers for the Student Advisor of UK students - I used to have them by l lost them - Im looking for either the numbeer for Claire or Mis Bruce thanks
Dont go to St Georges, Grendad. This is a crappy college with no facilities and the 'qualification' isnt worth the paper its written on. Ask around British Medical Schools - they wont accept it, and that should give you a clue to what a waste of money it is.

This 'course' is there to attract money out of low-attaining (and gullible) international students who can't get a place anywhere else and their parents can 'buy' them a year in Grenada.

If you actually want to study Medicine, its utterly pointless.
