might help you stand out to get a job in the end e.g. if you have a language or something.

can someone tell me whether getting a specialism is important along with a pgce?

It can be however it can also restrict you if you don't end up going for a job in that specialism. I.e. Having a specialism in Early years and then going for a job in Year 5.

can i ask whether you have applied for specialism or not?
the uni thats 10 mins from me doesnt do specialism but if i travel 40 mins more, i can do a specialism in science.

really struggling to decide

I wanted to do a specialism until I realised my chosen uni didn't do it. I opted for my chosen Uni without the specialism. I am however doing Primary so it may be different for Secondary if that's what your doing?!

I have accepted an offer for Primary at Bradford but my interview was on the 7th. I feel like I should be doing something to prepare for September but don't know what! Any tips anyone? x

Congratulations! I wanted to go to MMU but I haven't applied there yet because I only have Spanish and I thought they wanted two languages. Did you offer a second language?

If this was for me then my second language is extremely week. One of the conditions of my offer is to complete a French booster course.

Yeah I've passed them both. I took them on separate days as I wanted to concentrate on each subject fully for at least a week but I know people who did them on one day to get them out of the way. Good Luck with it! Its exactly like the practise tests so you will be fine! I handed my health check and CRB in last week and they aren't sending off the CRB's until May so won't here anything until at least June i'd guess. There are some reading lists on Amazon but with the change in curriculum I don't want to buy a book which isn't relevant anymore. Feel like i'm wasting prep time sat around doing nothing!
How long can you keep hold of an offer? Awaiting for my final uni to come back to me in regards to whether I have an interview or not?

You don't have to respond to any offers until all of you choices have given you offers/decline you (unless you want to) - then you have up to 10 days to reply to one

Just enjoy your free time, trust me, you need to start the PGCE fully rested! If you do read stuff/watch stuff/visit places, make it fun stuff that you're really interested in.. Visit museums to see what they offer for children. Read lots of childrens/teens books. Read books about childhood like novels. Watch teacher documentaries. Don't overload, just have fun and enjoy seeing your friends and family.

It completely depends on the specialism as I am doing Primary with Spanish so I learn everything so if I don't want to teach it I will have learnt everything anyway.
Hi all, anyone gained a place on the social Science PGCE at the IOE (institute of Education)

I was planning on doing science specialism!

But my undergrad degree was in chemistry, so I thought there's no point in me 'specialising in science' when surely the employer could see my degree was in chemistry...
Making me a specialist in science anyway... without needing the 'specialism title'... I don't know if that would work...

In my opinion I don't see what a Science specialism will do for you at primary age (just my opinion). You will have to teach the same curriculum whether you specialise in that or not, and Science is 1 of many topics that you are going to be teaching.

I would honestly focus on getting your application in as this is very competitive. Maybe the Science specialism won't be as competitive so you may have more of a chance getting on the course quite late in the game?!

I know I'm not really helping, just giving my opinions! Hopefully there's some food for thought.

I would look at the percentages of past PGCE graduates on getting a job within the first 6 months. Most Unis will have that on their websites.

Yeah. I already had my interviews but needed to firm my offers soon!

Decided to firm with no specialism. Hope it doesnt put me in too much of a disadvantage :/

I did wonder really the whole point of specialising in something. No one seemed to be able to give me a definite answer about it!
