Watched Cloud Atlas over Christmas. **** me was that film bad.

What?!

The only reason I've read for why people say it is a bad film is because it can be confusing during its first viewing (Which in itself is not a reason to condemn a film as bad). If you watch it more than once it makes so much more sense, and it really does become a great movie.

I genuinely think it'll be viewed as a classic in years to come.

It's 6 bad short films, spread over one long film. Each story is exactly the same and each story is ****ing boring. I was genuinely bored and had to force myself to finish it,

If you think each story was exactly the same then you either didn't watch it, or didn't pay attention. There are similarities to each story, but that's because it's the entire point of the film. It's supposed to show a connection to each part, so you could even argue that it's partly worked on you.
Cloud Atlas was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it a lot.

The other recent film that took me by surprise was Side Effects. Excellent movie.

I knew little of these before watching them. I wish I could watch more movies in this way, than be bombarded with reviews and opinions in the trail of the hype train.

I understand the point and I understand that there are differences but essentially each story is the same and each story is bad. It just did nothing for me and was completely predictable from beginning to end (once you realised it was 6 stories obviously).

Brilliant. I loved the ending especially.
Inside Llewyn Davies was better than I thought it would be. Carey Mulligan was superb in it - great to see her not just play the same wispy role each time, and Oscar Isaac was good I thought but not great. All in all it was a nice film to watch, even if it felt as if it was a little stuck at points.

Anyone else think Frank Vincent (Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Casino) looks really like Father Ted? I can't get the thought out of my mind when he's on screen now haha.

Anyone else seen Lone Survivor? I thought I was going to hate it but I actually really enjoyed it.

Disagree about the fighting scene. I loved it. It's supposed to be like that imo. Have you seen Band of Brohters? The best TV series ever made and they, too, have quirky banter in parts. Cliche a bit yea I guess but it's what I expected and wanted to see. But then again in another life I would have loved to be SEAL so I love action scenes like these. And it was miles ahead of the vast majority of modern action films (a la the latest die hard which was so bad i almost didn want to finish watching). I am far from an expert but the way they portrayed that fighting was very realistic in my eyes.

I was just watching The Best Man Holiday and have to say, Terence Howard is an amazing actor. In pretty much everything I see him in, he does a great job.

I love Terence Howard, he's awesome.

Ahhh Tree Of Life. I wanted you to be perfect. But you were only very good. Sigh.

Really?! I wouldn't even say it was very good. The only word I'd use to describe it is...'nice'.

I recently watched Malena again. Very sad film but very good. Monica Belluci is just stunning.
Watched Dallas Buyers Club.

Impressive, but very heavy (sad) in parts. Acting is terrific.

8/10.

It took some time to get used to but I thought a lot of it was very poignant and many moments were genuinely arresting. Bits of it were laughable though. Like the altruistic dinosaur. And the Sean Penn scenes were annoying. Overall I appreciated the ambition but thought it needed a little more bite.
Just watched Last Vegas. Don't know why I did. Didn't laugh once! Or raise a smile tbf
Anyone missing the hype around Nebraska - just watched it and found it such a deploringly sad, as in pathetic, movie. Perhaps because I'm still too young for the themes to resonate with me, but eurgh, everything was so cinematically trying.

Really? I thought it was rather brilliant. :holmes: Fantastic cinematography and production value in general which arrests you even as you're trying to figure out what the film means to you (for me, it came across as a meditation on the place, value or even point of grief in the universe, and in a more general sense a sort of conflict - not quite head-on, perhaps - between rationality and emotion. That's why the 'altruistic dinosaur' makes sense: it suggests the value of nature). It's also comfortably the best Brad Pitt performance I've seen.
Saw Out of the Furnace last night. Really impressed. Don't agree with Dr K's somewhat lukewarm response.

Casey Affleck and Christian Bale are as fine as ever and the writing is good. Superb soundtrack and brooding cinematography of industrial Pennsylvania with a muted palette all add to the atmosphere of blue collar despearation and disappointment. A particualrly heartbreaking scene between Bale and Zoe Saldana and even a nod to the Deer Hunter. Woody Harrleson plays a very nasty character indeed.

All in all an excellent piece of work IMHO.

Have been working my way through 1001 movies you must see before you die. Watched a fair few but still got many more to watch. A good book for a film fanatic in my opinion, though the pages on some films contain spoilers which is a bit annoying, but hey. I also have the rough guide to film, which focuses on the actual directors which is another interesting book

I like it too. Just to dip into after you've watched a film to see if it's in there and what someone else thought of it. Or see what other films are well regarded by a particular director.
