If it's a genuine concern. Learn krav maga. People rarely shoot unarmed people without reason so you'll get plenty of opportunity for a disarm manoeuvre.

means you're a coward and surrender just to keep living as a coward?

Good gosh do forgive me for not wanting a society where the crime rate would RISE?

But no bring it on, I think we're missing out on the potential school shootings, increase in gun homocides and number of teenage idiots who will find it easier to mess about with an adult's gun "for a laugh".

This attitude is part of the reason why I'm so confused sometimes by American society. Being in California, I'm probably one of the few anti-gun people at my school, and the one question that I can never get an answer to is why, in a civilized, first-world society, does the general populace feel the NEED to own a firearm or an assault weapon? It should not be necessary.

Well as stalin once said ' Remove the man, remove the problem'. Guns could do this just fine.

Yeah, because I woudn't trust some people with a fresh teabag, let alone a gun.

I find it pretty hilarious the amount of people who equate not wanting guns to cowardice. Because everyone knows guns are the tools of a real man.

Theres some interesting studies that link easy gun access to a higher gun crime rate, I don't have sources at the moment so i wont bother trying to argue without them, but they're out there.

Why should I be unarmed when a criminal points to my head a gun or knife that he bought at the black market to steal me my hard earned money,or the car for which I made big sacrifices,or to assault my family?People who oppose guns are cowards who are happy just to live one day more by giving in to any criminal until there is nothing left to steal from them.

I know right? Some criminals even have fully automatic weapons and grenades so I should be able to have them too! Wait a minute, why do I have to settle for having weapons that are only as powerful and lethal as those used by criminals? I should be allowed to have an LMG, or a rocket launcher, or maybe a tank, right?
I'd much prefer to have police control over firearms. Sure there will always be a black market, but I personally don't agree with America's attitude towards guns. The rate of gun crime over there compared to the UK says it all.

You make it sound like people break into houses accidentally...

I did have a drunk guy run into my apartment door, burst into tears and ask for his mom. But I'm not quite sure that's the same thing.

That said, I don't think more guns is the answer to this problem. One need only look at American culture. :/

I think you're a coward. Why do you need a gun to defend yourself? Coward!!!
If you really are a Marine, you've probably been trained to use a gun, and to think tactically under pressure. Most average citizens when faced with a real intruder (which is unlikely to be a clear face to face situation) would either not shoot them (possibly resulting in the gun being turned back on them), miss, or panic and shoot the wrong person.

I don't have a strong opinion on guns. Largely I'm against them on account of escalation - they are obtainable in the UK, but still rare. If I was for them I'd probably be ok with ex-military personnel, who have had the proper training and experience, having guns (yes, some will misuse them, but less so than the average population). Half the population has an IQ of less than 100. I don't want the people on Jeremy Kyle to have access to guns.

If that makes me a coward, so be it - I do not think cowardice is always stupid, and I do not think bravery is always intelligent (though clearly it can be an extremely admirable thing under the right circumstances).

... People who oppose guns are cowards ...

I think you'll find that it is anyone who uses a gun (or indeed is prepared to use one) that's a coward ...

If you own a farm and need a firearm for pest control, fine.

If you are a gun enthusiast and enjoy shooting for sport or hunting, fine.

If you are a maniac who wants to own a firearm to gun down any person who happens to break into your house, no.

For the second one I'd have tighter controls and only allow people to store there weapons at special shooting centres.

I'd be happy to carry a gun just like our friends in America.

The trouble is of course that often those who die of a bullet wound are often not in a position to use that gun to try to mitigate the pressure someone elses index finger is putting on a trigger of a gun thats pointing at them.

Death by gun for most people comes totally out of the blue and the first they know about it is when they are staring at the sky and breathing their last.

It isnt like being an army sniper where you know someone is looking to shoot you and you can make preparations to hopefully avoid it and launch a pre-emptive strike.

Look at the people who you pass on the streets of Britain. Would you really want many of them to have access to a gun? Many of them dont have good basic skills just to get along well in general society let alone giving them access to a remote killing machine.

OK so we have knives.

But there is a world of difference between pulling a trigger from some distance away and getting close enough to push a knife into someone,to see/smell/hear and feel their fear, their reaction, their death.

I'd like to amend this post. Those who use guns to kill innocents and civilians are cowards. People who use a gun (Legitimate wars/ sports/ pest control) are not cowards.

You are a coward for not using your bare hands to fight back.
There's far too many idiots in the country to allow everyone to have a gun.

In theory I'd be pro gun because I tend to side with maximum liberty. But just taking a look around in public and imaging them all walking around potentially armed is enough to put me off. There is also the issue of the police, we'd have to regularly arm them as well and their firearms specialists cause enough problems as it is. It would not be a step in the right direction.

That said, almost everyone in Switzerland is armed and they have some of the lowest murder rates in the world.

Learning Krav Maga does not automatically mean you are invincible. Disarming somebody is very difficult in reality, best left to the military professionals.

If somebody is holding a gun to your face and wishes to kill you he would of done at the first opportunity, he would not stand around for 5 minutes shouting in your face to get your wallet out. If an armed man wishes to kill an unarmed opponent, he will do. You will not have time to disarm him. The best thing is to give him your wallet, get a description and other evidence etc and give it to the police. Never fight an armed opponent who has a gun, don't give him a reason to shoot you.

Well of course it isn't accidentally. (except for uber-drunks)

But then again I wouldn't argue that they all necessarily need a 5.56×45mm in their skull.

You would have to be a pretty good shot to hit someone in the head in the dark first time. I doubt most people would be quick enough to get a second shot off with a straight pull rifle. I know I wouldn't and I've been shooting for years.
