Things that AFFECT you, can have a positive or negative EFFECT.
Affect is the causation of something whereas effect is the outcome.
affect is a verb, something that you do

effect is a noun, a something

see the examples above

Effect is a noun and affect is a verb. You should know what nouns and verbs are if you understand basic English which I'm presuming you do.

Effect in a sentence would be 'That's a really cool sound effect' or 'What effect does x have on y' for example.

Affect in a sentence would be 'Will this sound effect affect the mood of the film' or 'how did x affect y'.

I don't really know how else to explain it. I guess it kinda comes natural to some people and not others.

Effect can also be a verb though, for example to "effect change"

In this case, affect is a specialist term in psychology, and unless that's your degree subject, which I'm guessing it isn't or you'd know it already, you can afford to forget about this one.

It's quite clear from this thread that the students of TSR have no idea and just pretend to know.

Post 6 nails it. Post 7 is also correct, as is post 10.
