Help injury

Well I injured the top of my foot 6 weeks ago. The pain hasn't got any better I've been resting it for about 2 weeks but the pain comes back. I am now sick of the pain and wondered if I need to go to see a doctor and get it seen to?

I've got any runners nightmare overuse injury

Any advice!

When you say 'overuse injury', what do you mean? If it's a stress fracture, for example, it will take longer than 6 weeks to get back to full fitness

I recently broke my ankle and, while it still hurts, the bone's completely healed and it's just a matter of not being a wimp about the pain when I run/play sport. If your bone isn't healed, however, you might be aggravating it by running. Set aside a spare evening, go to a hospital through the NHS and they'll sort you out

How do you know if it's a stress fracture if you haven't been? You will probably need an x-ray or at least a doctor to examine it first.

If it is a stress fracture then basically they will say rest and ice it until any swelling goes down. Then you will have to slowly start using the foot more and more, if it hurts too much then back off. Only once you are totally pain free should you start running again, and even then you should ease back into it carefully or risk re-injury

You're probably best seeing a doctor, if it's always painful, go to A&E because that might be faster. They'll check it out and tell you what to do.

I've been doing some research on my symptoms and got some advice.

Quick update. Went to see the doctor today said possible stress fracture. Sent me to have a x-ray going to take 7-10 days for the results, if nothing shows up either a MRI scan or seeing a foot specialist.

Do I need a cast if it a stress fracture?

most likely not, you'll just be told not to run for 6 weeks. You'll probably be allowed to walk on it.

From the history you gave, it sounds like it's pretty likely a stress fracture.

Yeah sounds like it. I've read that sometimes it doesn't come up on the x-ray is this true?

they're hard to spot on xray and sometimes don't show up - before it progresses to a full blown stress fracture, its often preceded by a "bone strain", which leads to stress fracture but won't show up on xray. Can sometimes be seen on MRI. Gold standard test for stress-fracture or bone strain is a SPECT scan.

Oh right cheers. Got a few more days until my results are back. Might need a nine scan or mri then. Just want it to be diagnosed and sorted!
