About the feminization of education

Poll

do you agree that education is feminized?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/telegraph-view/3641881/Feminising-education-is-of-benefit-to-no-one.html

The typical adolescent male is a noisy creature with a short attention span. But his fidgety restlessness also reflects a competitive spirit that can produce unexpected triumphs in the examination halls as well as on the sports ground.

Since the introduction of GCSEs in the late 1980s, however, the school environment has been subtly adjusted in a way that minimises the natural advantages of the male and maximises those of the female. An emphasis on coursework favours the conscientious - and girls are often very conscientious. (Teenage boys are less so, to put it mildly.)

If some state school classrooms have become anti-competitive, neglecting the problem-solving that boys traditionally enjoy, that is partly the result of the ideological prejudices of the educational establishment. But it may also have a more straightforward cause: the shortage of male teachers.

do you agree that education is feminized? is it easier for girls to get better results because it caters to their strengths?

Nope, as a prominent neuroscientist pointed out the week, we socialise kids to have these differences so all that needs doing is for parents to socialise their boys to have the skill sets needed to perform well in school.

link? show at least a few serious studies that support what you're saying if you're gonna present it as gospel.

where do i even start? ok, first of all i knew it was gonna be a woman. second, it's one scientist (a very feminist one) saying something, there is no study, nothing to back it up. typical feminist.

if you don't see this as biased

In a speech at ScienceGrrls’s ‘Fighting the Neurotrash’ talk at the Women of the World Festival

are you gonna give a lone, baseless quote/opinion from stormfront on black people being mentally handicapped next?

now this is a real study:

http://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/dec/02/men-women-brains-wired-differently

Scientists have drawn on nearly 1,000 brain scans to confirm what many had surely concluded long ago: that stark differences exist in the wiring of male and female brains.

No, not at all. I feel like this is some sort of ploy to downplay the achievements of girls/women in education.

She is one of the UKs leading neuroscientists and everything she says about the brain being highly chanhgable is true. To me as a zoologist it is just common sense, it happens frequently in the rest of the animal kingdom so it is pretty clearly going to happen in humans.

Hahaha no it isn't where do they account for social conditioning changing the brain structure in any way in that study?

I personally think these arguments, studies and articles are all written by people with a lot of time on their hands.

I'll ignore the ridiculous generalisations and just say this: who cares? Study something worthwhile.

you're a zoologists but you don't believe evolution works above the neck? since you mentioned animals, you do know that female monkeys pick dolls as well, right? nevertheless, i provided an actual study and i can provide 10 more, you simply provided a feminist and her personal ideology.

I find the double standards when it comes to gender inequalities to be hilarious.

When men are outperforming women by some measure, people always moan that it's due to patriarchal discrimination, eg more male CEOs than female CEOs.

However, when women do better (eg, with grades at school), nobody complains about it, and people say that it must simply be because girls are better.

Even if that is true, which I don't think for a moment it is, why don't we talk practically here. You think we should focus on campaigns to get parents to treat their boys differently, something that would take decades (all the while boys are failing year after year) rather than simply change our education system to accommodate both boys and girls?

Wow.

Yeah I've read many studies that show the complete opposite to what redferry is saying. I don't believe her "source" for a second.

It is a complete farce to claim that you can conclude that based on the article you have subsequently linked to.
Yeh it's made to help the weaker sex catch up.
These generalisations are so ridiculous. I'm a girl, and I always struggled with coursework and essay based subjects at school. I'm much better at logical thinking and problem-solving and did well in Maths & Sciences. A lot of girls are the same as me, while a lot of boys are better at skills you consider feminine.

Go ahead, provide me with 10 studies showing differences between male and female brains which account for early socialisation.

The burden of proof is on you as you are the one who beleives there IS a difference. You represent the hypothesis, my theory is more of a null.

No but if you will read my original quote I said a prominent neuroscientist said there was no difference. He asked for proof - I provided proof she said that.
Oh here we go with the generalisations again.

here:

but you will simply reject everything based on your personal ideology. like showing evidence that the grand canyon wasn't formed in 50 years to a creationist. you quoted animals as an example and i asked you about why female monkeys choose dolls yet you ignored it.

and this thread was about boys and girls being different and needing different ways to learn in school, not just about brains. things like hormones. men having 10-20 times more testosterone than women doesn't affect behavior and therefore different ways of interacting with everything around them? or is testosterone another patriarchal conspiracy as well? stop posting feminist opinions from feminist gatherings and start showing some real evidence if you're gonna state a simple opinion as fact.
