Which A levels are best for English Literature at Uni?

Are you taking both english lit and language or is it combined at your sixth form? If not I'd recommend taking both

My school doesn't really offer english language so it's just english lit but apparently that's alright- I don't think english language is very important for uni studies because they're mainly literature based

English Lit and History is a very good basis. Any other 'literate' subject (like a Foreign Language, Politics, Sociology) on top iwould be an advantage. All 'top' Unis will want to see evidence of your active interest in literature outside your A level syllabus - so start reading other books! Latin will help you a great deal, both linguistically and in terms of classical literary background. I did A level German and was at a massive advantage with Anglo-Saxon. I had only O level Latin (I'm very old) and I found I coped far better than my peers who had no language background. To have had them both at A level would have been a massive plus.

oh okay thank you do you think maths is an important A-level to have?

For English? Not in the least. If there's any chance you will change your mind about doing English, it's a very useful A level to have.

I know I want to do English at uni but I meant just in general afterwards- I think I might want to go in to Law and I was wondering if it would be good to have maths for that

At the moment I'm going to take English, History, German and Maths A-level but I'm considering doing either Latin or Physics instead of either German or Maths. I know I want to take English Literature at uni and also that I probably won't have any trouble with either Latin or Physics if I do take them- could you possibly give me some advice?
The only two subjects which I really feel strongly about are English and History- I know I want to take them. However I also enjoy Maths and Physics but I feel like languages are quite important for English applications- are they?

English literature, history, German and Latin would be a great set of choices but uncles you're hoping to go to one of the better universities that are more strict on things like that, take whatever you enjoy.. An irrelevant subject is fine - even two if you're going to drop one of them after AS. I'm hoping to do Literature at university too and I'm taking English literature, English language, French and Geography or Maths - Neither geography nor maths would be particularly helpful for English but I enjoy them, and I will be dropping the one I choose after AS so I don't see the problem. The way I look at it is would I rather be stressed with a huge work load (including a 4th essay subject - that I don't even like) and come out with a bad grade in the AS or take something that universities could consider 'irrelevant' but I'd enjoy learning it and get a better grade in the AS. Either whatever I get in the other subjects and a C or below in RE, Sociology, whatever 'compliments' English or get an A/B in Geography or Maths although they're pretty much completely unrelated to English. Plus, as long as you can fight the argument as to why you chose it (if you're worried about the relevance) then it doesn't matter - like "the essays I have to write for A-Level geography are great practice for developing my analytical skills" or something..
