From what I can remember for the ucas tariff, there are no exemptions and it doesn't matter when you got the points either. I used my FSMQ as part of my points and I did that in y11 :smile:

It was a cut off combined with your UKCAT score. From what I've seen I think I was one of the lowest to be offered an interview this year (tariff 557 and UKCAT 715) and I've managed to get an offer. So I'm pretty sure you'll be fine if you get the grades you are predicted and a decent UKCAT score :smile:

I'm on a gap year now as I got 4 rejections last year and I think it has actually done me good. It's given me a chance to earn some money before starting uni and also allowed me more time to prepare for my interviews without school work getting in the way.

I got a job in boots, so no, not really healthcare related. But I do volunteer with stroke patients.

Haha well they do sell paracetamol :wink:

i'm veering towards finding an HCA job but it's a hard job, and the money isn't very good. Or i could do what you've done get a normal job and continue with my voluntary work

Yeah, ibuprofen as well :wink:

that's originally what I planned to do but I got a fair few interviews but couldn't get an actual job so just settled on boots. You can always link it into medicine as well as although I'm not on the healthcare side (I do occasionally help people over there) it does help to improve 'people skills'

I think my main problem was that I left it fairly late on to start applying for them so there were loads of people in the same position as me applying for the same jobs

International student here. Just received an offer A100 (Sunday/ March 30th/ 6pm GMT). I got an e-mail directly for barts admissions, not through track. In fact, I have yet to receive an e-mail from track, but I logged in anyway and noticed the offer.

Well, if you are talking QMUL vs UCL, you are right, that the WOW factor for UCL is higher just in terms of ranking. However, if you are talking about Barts and the London vs UCL, in terms of standard of medical training, both are quite well regarded within the medical community. To add on to that, QMUL is also quite famous for law, so it is also well regarded in the legal community.

@Bibzilla If time and money are not pressing issues for you, i.e. you don't mind spending a year extra in medical school, and paying an extra year of fees, UCL is the better option because of its name.
The medical school you went to has no impact on your Foundation Year 1 job, as F1 forms are anonymised in terms of your medical school(according to this link)

Honestly, 3 extra years is a very long time to me. Taking in to account, that the average life expectancy is 80 years, I would have wasted about 5% of my life unnecessarily . In the Singaporean context, for most males, the cycle is something like this. 19-23-> local med school, 24-> housemanship, 25-26-> complete NS term as med officer in army, 27-32-> post grad training(could be longer).

For people who attend 5 year UK med school. 19-20->complete NS term as rifleman as infantry in army, 21-25-> med school, 26-28-> serve as houseman and medical officer to get full registration(compulsory if you want to be registered), 29 -34 post grad training.

We lose two years compared to male counterparts who studied locally, two years compared to female counterparts who studied internationally, four years compared to female counterparts who studied locally, as they can start post grad training immediately(the girls do not need to serve army and get to start specialising after housemanship).
So those that go to 6 year medical schools, i.e. UCL, will lose 5 years to girls of our batch who are studying locally, and 3 years to girls who studied overseas.

Next thing is cost. Bart's is the cheapest medical school in London for an international student, according to AUG is 127600 pounds, UCL is 169000 pounds. That's quite a lot of difference. If you go for Imperial College London, its almost 200k pounds.

In terms of landing housemanships, for Singapore, you don't have a problem. We are so short of doctors in Singapore that they are begging us to come back.
There are many doctors who graduated from much lower ranking schools working back in Singapore, University of Tasmania being a prime example. I actually shadowed a senior consultant anaesthetist that graduated from an Indian medical school.

However, if you are talking about the UK, I think we both know that an international medical student, regardless of where they graduated from, has close to zero chance of getting housemanship.

Saying all that, I am probably slightly biased because I only have Barts as my offer and not UCL. However, I put my four choices as Barts, King's College London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow because of the reasons I have mentioned above(time-> all 5 yrs and money-> all less than 150k).

I would go to King's, but the down side is its enormous class size of 400, though their excellent teaching makes up for that.
