maths for engineering?

I graduate from Petroleum Engineering at University of Manchester this year.

I'm starting a job with Shell as a Petroleum Engineer from July.

If anybody has any questions fire away.

1) Meng or Beng?
2) Is the starting salary good
3) was the course hard

I did the BEng.

The starting salary is one of the highest as far as graduate engineering salaries go (not to brag).

Yes the course is hard, but not impossible and if you're genuinely interested in the upstream sector it's fun.

Yeah, what a levels did you do and what grade did you get?

im considering doing MEng at Manchester aswell.

For undergrad Pet. Eng. Manchester is the best place (again not to brag).
The course here is the most established, accredited with industry links etc.


I did Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Biology . All A's

Do u speak french? Btw, I'm doing maths, f.maths, physics and geology. Is that ok for petEng?

Yes I do, but I'm not fluent.

Yeah those are perfect A levels for Pet. Eng.

1st year Engineering maths modules should be a breeze for you.

Does gcse matter a big deal? And what did u get at GCSE's?

Honest answer, no GCSE do not matter much as long as you have grade B or above in Sciences and Maths.

I got 5A*8A

A levels are more important. For Engineering anyway.

That's a lot if GCSE's.. What GCSE's did you do

bio, chem, phys, maths, statistics, eng lang, eng lit, french, german, religion, electronics, geography, IT

You seem very smart. Why didn't you do MEng?

I was originally enrolled in the MEng but switched to the BEng.


I didn't need to do MEng. I did an assessed summer internship with Shell after my 2nd Year and they made me an offer and were willing to take me with a BEng.

A lot of my friends are continuing with the MEng. The choice depends on the individual.

Ok Any benefits of doing MEng instead of BEng?

It depends what you're aiming for.

An MEng means a Masters degree which is of course superior to a Bachelors.

Employability wise it depends where you're applying and for what role. Certain companies don't differentiate much between BEng and MEng, whereas others do.

The majority of Pet. Eng. students do a Masters, either a direct MEng, or a BEng followed by an MSc degree in Pet. Eng. at Imperial or Heriot Watt.

I got lucky with the BEng

For now you shouldn't worry about BEng/MEng.

If you start the course you can switch between them anytime you want. These decisions are generally made in 3rd Year of studies.

For now focus on getting in! : )
