Current student nearing end of first year, fire me questions!

I'm coming to the end of first year psychology and so if anyone has questions about university, where things are, the ucas process, etc I know my stuff. Also, I'm doing psychology if anyone want info on that.

I still live at home but have friends who have moved out.

hmmm where to start

I guess I cant ask you about the Liberty Quay accomodation in case you didn't stay there, but where did you choose to live and what was it like?

What was Freshers week like?

umm....

Did you try out any societies, are there many?

oh that'll do.... for now

How many soc's did you join? Are they expensive?

Are you catered or self-catered? Do people in your halls ever cook together or is it everyone for themselves?

How quickly did you make friends? Are you close friends with your flatmates?

Is it relatively easy to shut yourself away to study when other people are asking you to socialise etc? Where do you do most of your work - library, room, elsewhere?

Was it scary sleeping away from home to begin with?

How much personal stuff did you take, like clothing, books, decorations?

Sorry to bombard you!

I still live at home but have heard that Liberty Quay is nice. Most people move into private renting flats by second year so even if it isn't your cup of tea it's not the end of the world. There's loads of renting agencies in Newcastle too and Northumbria have their own - Northumbria lets.

Societies are varied and it all depends what you're into. I personally am only really active in PsychSoc and FemSoc but there's plenty more to choose from. Lots of sports facilities to keep you occupied. If you want to start any societies you can do that too. FemSoc was new this year.

Freshers week was mixed. If you like clubbing, you're in for a treat as Northumbria has events but so do all the local clubs which have an extended freshers pretty much as Newcastle Uni starts a week later than we do. Freshers fair is full of free things including glasses, pizza, desserts (from desserts delivered), and a load of other things.
Not too long after freshers Eldon Square has a student shopping night with massive discounts for students so that's a perk.

I joined rock soc, femsoc and psychsoc. All were £3 to join which is standard. Most are that price unless they include a big expense like pole dancing, horse riding and sky diving.

I know people in accommodation and food arrangements totally depend on how you are with cooking and which flatmates you get. I know people who do big group meals once a week and others who hoard food.

Even without flatmates (I live at home) it's really easy to make friends. Most come from being together on course but societies and sports are also a great way to make friends.

I can't tell you if it's easy to study in halls but the library has silent floors that you can retreat to and most buildings have their own computer rooms. Law has it's own library. I work mostly from home but the library is good if you want to study in between breaks.

"Was it scary sleeping away from home to begin with?" Maybe I should've put this in the main description. :l I know people who've moved out and all adapted brilliantly.

Since I'm pretty useless with the moving out thing here's a photo of my friends room who lives on New Bridge Street.

ah thanks for the answers  I kind of guessed some as I actually started uni last year but had to drop out early in the first term as my mum was ill, that was at portsmouth though but it sounds pretty similar which is good.

What do you have left to do this term, do you have exams still to do?

Have you sorted out a place to stay in the second year yet? or does that come later.

I only live half an hour away on the bus so I'm just staying at home. Save some moneys. I've done 2 exams this semester and have 2 left to do. Had 4 in January too but all pretty reasonable. So long as you keep on top of it the work load it's nothing to worry about.

Most of my course friends are still living at home so it's not uncommon. There's pros and cons to it all. I'd love a bit more lie in and being close to Newcastle town centre is very useful. But my house is no rent and I come home to this lil fella every day:

Ooh I'm doing Psychology from this September!

1. How is Psychology at University compared to A level? I heard there are more stats involved? :dontknow:

2. I didn't realise you had to pay for entry into societies.. does paying apply to all universities in the UK?

3. How much extra time are you allowed in exams at Uni? (I currently have extra time at school because of my medical condition - 25% extra time).

Thank you!

Yes you have that right. More stats, brace yourself for stats. There's no skirting around the issue that they are boring and confusing. They are really really important though so don't skip lectures or you'll be utterly clueless when you write lab reports (there's lots of that too!). If you've taken psychology before you're a step ahead of everyone else and some bits of the course are revision for me. There's a lots of new content though, not more difficult, just more.

I know people in Newcastle, Durham and Reading and this is standard. Think Newcastle's is a fiver so ours is comparatively pretty cheap. They're all student run so everything the society does comes out our pockets (unless you're popular and get funding from the union).

Uni is much more lenient with time. My last exam was 50 multiple choice questions and we got 2 hours to complete it so yeah, everyone leaves an hour early. I have a friend with a mental health issue so you can get your own room, stop start time conditions, etc for exams and extensions for assignments.

ah thanks for that, she had something called acute pancreatitis which is bad like in hospital for for 4-6 months kind of bad but she's out now which is the main thing. She has a thing for bad timing though having to get an ambulance out at about 23:50 on christmas day was tricky especially with no beds free, and I have had a few rare occasions where I wake up at night and think I hear shout my name again which is messed up :s-smilie:

Anyway moving on, hows your application going  have you got exams to do ?

I'm kind of fortunate in that my grades from last year got my application through for sept 2014, applied for liberty quay and other en-suite self catered places so now I just have to wait till sept

Yeah I have two exams (Open University) at the beginning of June - and one of my tutors hasn't told what topics I need to focus on when I'm revising! Feeling very lost! :P Aha glad you don't have to go through it all again

I can't wait for September!! You excited?

yeah I just wanna head out the door now, but I've started doing some weekend classes for my course (website/graphic design) as I realised I can't remember some things from college already :colondollar:
hello! I'm doing accounting and finance for 2014 intake, are most of the classes in the business building? I've been to newcastle n it seems like the business building is isolated. Also, any recommendation on the accommodation near the business building? thanks!

Business building is across the motorway (there's a big bridge so don't worry) which makes it a little isolated but it's only about a 3 minutes walk from the student's union which is the central campus point. Pretty much all your lectures will be there I think but for exams you can end up in different places. New Bridge is very close to the business building.

These may help you out:
