The capsule has many functions:

It provides protection against phagocytic and bacteriophage attack.
Helps prevent dessication (drying out) as the capsule contains water.
Acts as a barrier against toxins.
It has a role in adhesion.
Can be utilised as a nutrient source as it is composed of polysaccharide material.

It is a polysaccharide layer that lies outside the cell envelope of bacteria

Functions include: helps to prevent phagocytosis of the bacterium, protects against dessication, and helps the bacterium to adhere to surfaces
