Edexcel Health and Social Care AS Unit 1 and 4

Really panicking about these exams especially because I arm resisting them and haven't had any input from any teachers. Plus they are in just over a week. Is anyone else doing them, do you have any advice/ tips or anything?

Oh right cool. Are you prepared for it cause I know I am not? I did unit 4 in AS you must be doing the single award then.
Im kinda prepared just need to go over health promotion part. How did u make notes/revise for the exam?

And good luck:smile: yep im doing single award

It is generally taken by girls because the job roles from h&s are mainly nursing and hospital kinda jobs so people sterotypically think only 'girls' have them jobs but thats not the case. In my class there is a guy taking the course and we all get along with him just fine. He also wants to become a paramedic.

Sorry for the late reply only just seen this now. I haven't really done much preparation at all I am re sitting this exam as when I did it at AS. My teacher didn't even teach us much really. Do you have any notes that you could send. I am really getting worried considering their is only 6 days left.

Take a highlighter to make key bits of case studies stand out and when it says 'discuss' it wants you to give a two sided answer.

How much revision have you got done this weekend?
I'm doing this paper tomorrow too and I've been going through past papers and they all generally seem to be slight repeat of each other!

My teacher has told us from the beginning to revise health promotion because that where people are most likely to lose points; she said to specially focus on all the advantages and disadvantages to the different approaches ( biomedical, educational/behavioural and societal) and also revise why people embark on health promotion campaigns.

What I've been doing, as well as that, is just learning the key words for the different life stages and different affects to their development. Getting to school early tomorrow just to recap lifestyle choices and how they can damage an individuals health e.g smoking, so I recommend doing that too!

But for now I'm going to carry on looking through past papers and their mark schemes via the edexcel past paper app on the AppStore just to see how they are expecting to be answered.

If you need extra help get your mum or dad or whoever to test you on any notes you've made or from your text book just to see where you really need to revise.

Good luck for tomorrow and focus on them 10 mark questions!!

Thank you and why do people embark on health promotion campaigns? And are the 10-mark 'discuss' ones?

10 marks are the discuss ones yeah!
And basically a general answer would be to promote a healthy lifestyle, to prevent Ill health and to increase fitness (if you forget the last one you could write to prolong life - easier to remember as it's the '3P's')

More specific;

Biomedical approach - reduce cost on NHS, to stop the spread of diseases, and anything that you can think of that could be considered a valuable answer really!

Societal - to reduce luxurious appeal, make it compulsory to do things or illegal

Educational/behavioural - to educate people on how to avoid getting Ill, how to behave when they are Ill, how to recognise symptoms (all those are generally for the illness side) then you have to allow people to make informed choices and simply to educate in general

If you wanna know anything else don't be afraid to ask haha it's helping me remember them!

Aw thank you  and what do you predict that might come up tomorrow by looking at previous past papers?

Btw I don't get the nature-nurture stuff:unimpressed:

I don't really think you can predict exactly because they're all generally the same thing you know what I mean? Last years paper had infancy and development during adulthood for the first question, can't remember the second question and then the third was just general health promotion, the paper before was mostly about adolescence and health promotion aswell. So don't take this for sure but I'm guessing that it might be something on the elderly ( so it will be useful to know physical oremotional changes during this time e.g reduced height due to disc compression or hair turning white/grey due to the pigment losing colour) and again obviously health promotion. I think the second question in the paper is something about factors that affect your health.

But nature v nurture is pretty simple I guess, it's just like whether what makes up our personality is inherited or due to our environment. So like whether people are born aggressive or whether it's something they develop throughout their life due to negative impacts during socialisation for example, listening to abusive language, watching violence in real life or in media (sometimes you can use an example like the James bugler child murderers were believed to be imitating a really violent film)
But for nature/nurture I'd just google the argument and see what people think orrrr go to debate.org they have some good answers on there!
