I prefer to be upper class. Hopefully anyway.

Was working class, but now I probably just come under the label "student" although I am far more affluent that most students.

I hate the middle class people who are stuffy and up their arse. Usually extreme conservatives and the socialist/ green/ lib dems and some labour supporter wing of the middle class. All of them are pathetic and out of touch.

For me, middle class is an insult.

Returning to the thread, I think a large proportion of the population would deem themselves 'middle class.' Whether that's true or not really depends upon your perspective.

I like normal tolerant people. Many middle class people are champagne socialists or reserved conservatives. Some are also full out feminazi, vegan, pacifist, politically correct nut cases. I don't like any.

Don't forget that middle class is split into upper and lower middle classes. e.g. I am lower middle class, my parents own a pretty nice house and a couple of low-medium priced cars for work, but we can't afford the latest games console or a flashy new TV unless we save up the money like everybody else, and we can still eat into overdrafts regularly if the bills get too much. I have friends who are upper middle class who own 3+ high class cars and maybe a swimming pool or a hot tub.

Middle class is most definitely not an insult! I would much rather be called middle class than working class, and I would take it as an insult to be called working class.

I was brought up in the middle class and so (unless I was filled with guilt and self-loathing - both sometimes identified with the MC!) I won't say it's an insult.

Actually (classic middle class sentence starter) I think there are good things about the MCs.

Upsides

* They value learning and culture and make a point of supporting both.

* Middles often yearn for things to be better and want to build a better society.

* They can be very funny - some of our best comedians are of the middling sort. I love people like David Mitchell, Miles Jupp, Ian Hislop and Tom Hollander, all solid MC figures with huge humour quotients.

* Middle class people often do very socially useful things, like being doctors, teachers, university academics, theatre producers and tax accountants.

* They spread good taste and common decency.

* The middle class have a very white vision of what culture is. There's also a huge number of culture vultures. The culture of others are taken and watered down to appeal to the 'middle'

* In my experience of working in Middle class communities the Middle class only care about their own backyards. They don't care about wider society. Call it gentrification if you like. As long as the trouble stays in the poor areas the problem doesn't exist. The middle class in my experience tend to care less about young people in their neighbourhoods too. They like to know they're around, but don't want to know they exist. People put their arms up in panic when they see groups of young people hanging around in places being loud and well... acting like young people. Its apparently 'anti-social behaviour'.

* Not a fan of either, but I see their appeal. I prefer someone grittier and harder.

in my experience you have different sorts of MC locations:

1) Your liberal and lefty sorts of villages and towns where you're more likely to have vegan festivals, artsy events and pretentious farmers markets, e.g. Hebden Bridge.

2) Your ultra conservative towns full of older people with cash who don't like anyone different and aren't open to new outlooks and cultures, e.g. small middle class villages in The Yorkshire Dales and in the Homecounties.

3) Typical middle class suburbs. Full of families and city workers who want to settle down and have far too much money to be associating with 'peasants' who live near the city centre. You'll find these not too far from most cities.

4) Pretentious communities with biggish houses full of wannabe rich folk, e.g. Harrogate.

5) The gentrified part of a city. Used to be grittier, full of working class people and immigrants but is now populated by loads of middle class white hipster kids, e.g. Brixton

One characteristic I have identified with middle class communities is that they don't get out of the community much and they're all very white. Least in a poorer inner city area you get in contact with many different cultures (unless you live in a rough and very white ex-mining community)

Also what's with the middle class and burlesque? Is there a site called: 'Stuff that the Middle Class Like?
