Eurovision voting 'controversy' - public and juries split

So for those who don't know, Eurovision results are based 50% on public votes, and 50% on what 5 preselected 'experts' from each country think.

Obviously it's just a singing contest and no big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I can't say I'm all that surprised with both the way the public and the juries voted on that one. I would prefer if the contest was just based on actual votes; knowing that 50% of the result is decided by a panel of 5 randoms just made me less keen to bother voting.

Did you expect good-looking, straight, cis-gendered people, who conform to gender-normal dress-codes to be allowed to win?

I would wager the average immigrant would much prefer to see the Polish girls win, than the bearded lady (I'm actually ok with the idea of drag personally, it's up to him, but the choice was so obviously politically motivated). White people tend to be the least socially conservative out of all people.

Hey, I'm pretty pro-Europe and think immigrants have been a net positive for the country. This ain't nothing to do with anti-Europe-hate :tongue:.

Europe is the land of the Phoenix, the same logo used in 2012 Olympics, so it was in the bag that she would win.

Europe allowed her to win because of the message. This was about Europe's ideology not about winning the song contest.

Stuff like this is exactly why the juries exist. Poland's act was utterly terrible, and if it wasn't for the sleazy soft porn-esque posing they did on stage nobody would've voted for them at all. Cheap and tacky acts should not be allowed to win Eurovision in my opinion, it's supposed to be a music contest after all.

How is a man is a dress acting like Sacha Baron-Cohen's comic character Bruno, less sleazy than some dancing Polish girls, embracing their culture? I don't care about the act itself, I think she had a powerful voice (the Austrian entry I mean), but how on Earth can you seriously argue this point?

Despite that, I found it pretty amusing :biggrin: and the song wasnt that bad " shake what momma gave ya ! Haha " but they could have not done all the washing and the butter chumming etc then people wouldnt be doing so much hate on it. I guess they just wanted to mock all the folklore and tradition.

The popular vote being for Poland was my reference. It hasn't happened yet, which I'm pleasantly surprised by, but I was expecting some kind if "the popular vote was for the Poles 'cause of all the immigrants"

This. Europe wants to enforce the Eurovision Song Contest as a more serious talent based competition, not a competition for which country can get their most ridiculously dressed citizen on stage.


Oh man wish I watched it this year the one year I missed it and it seemed like a good one :frown:

Conchita's act wasn't sleazy in the slightest. Did you even watch the contest? :erm:

The Polish girls had pretty much no talent. The song was rubbish, their singing voices were painful to hear. I stand firmly by what I said: nobody would have voted for them at all if it wasn't for the sleaze.

Oh come on. A drag artist winning is the definition of 'cheap and tacky'. She was only averagely good vocally; the Netherlands was far better, and Spain was the standout in terms of actual music/vocal ability.

Anyway, I'm not so sure it was just the risqué dancing the juries objected to. According to the Guardian, the group are supposed to be quite pro-Russian. It makes you wonder if the entirety of this year's show was not, as you want to believe, about the music, but just a political statement intended to snub Russia.

And I'd agree that her winning feels politically motivated, but boy could that act sing.

Whilst not who I'd have chosen to win, I don't have a problem with her winning.

Well you might be right because it probably was for the act not the song itself ! But I dont understand why people are coming in with all the immigration and that. Polish people are quite decent to be around with, of course there are the benefit stealers etc but its not like there is no one like that in the UK ! Besides Conchita did have a powerful voice but she also won for being seen as the strong, not afraid woman who doesnt care what the society thinks! Basically both acts were unusual for Eurovision and I think thats why they got so many votes
