Gender seems divisive on TSR so I'm wondering where people's views stand, and whether some men are still sexist after all the progress of the last few decades.

Do you believe that the Patriarchy continues oppressing women? If yes, how, and what can we do to improve things? :dontknow:

If you don't believe the Patriarchy continues oppressing women, do you think it used to oppress them? Or do you think women have never been oppressed by the Patriarchy? :lolwut:

No.
Women in the west are the most pampered spoiled and priviledged people in the world.

The OP never mentioned women in the West. You'd have a hard job arguing that patriarchy does not oppress women anywhere in the world.

Yes. I just wish certain feminists wouldn't treat men as the enemy.

What's the patriarchy? The mysterious oppressive organization that gives women more lenient criminal sentences and allows women to attack men without consequence?

Yes but modern feminists need to take a step back and look at the real issues.

Of course patriachy oppresses women in the third/developing world, ......you know, .......the one that the vast majority of feminists dont take up about.
Its far more important to fight the facism of bossiness calling and dongle jokes.

Yes, but feminists in the Western world don't give a toss about that, they're far too conceited and self involved

Since "The Patriarchy" used in this way is a feminist concept, there is no way the answer could really be anything other than that it horribly oppresses women and has done for a thousand years (or two thousand, or longer, depending on which feminist you read up on) and women, being the able, capable creatures that feminism says they are, were apparently unable to do anything about (how demeaning is feminism to women!).

In reality, patriarchal societies have protected women and children (possibly overly so but that's another matter) and sacrificed huge proportions of men. Patriarchal societies have certainly oppressed men but, on the whole, sheltered women from the worst of it.

Yes, that's the concept.

I am wary of such an assumption. It is generated by feminist propaganda and an artist exhibition in the USA by middle-eastern women tried to tell the world "we are not oppressed and stop trying to force your western values upon us". They don't want western 'equality': they would far rather enjoy their current status.

The question assumes The Patriarchy exists.
Yup. I was sat there looking for the option "The patriarchy does not exist - We are all oppressed in some way, by the elite"

Most women in Britain have rather privileged lifestyles compared to women elsewhere. However, elements of patriarchy still exist in our society. Whereas in other parts of the world, patriarchy physically oppresses women (i.e. women not being allowed to do certain things), in Britain patriarchy manifests itself psychologically. There's the obvious argument for things like beauty ideals. Young girls are bombarded with the notion that to be beautiful is to have it all. The West emphasizes and then capitalizes on the notion of of female beauty. Women spend ridiculous amounts of money on fake tans, sunbeds, fake eyelashes, eye curlers, makeup, cosmetic surgery, waxing, shaving, epilation, laser treatments, electrolysis etc. Even our hair has to be curled, straightened, blow-dryed, de-frizzed, conditioned, dyed etc Some girls will go out of their way to 'look good', thinking that their natural appearance is just not good enough. I know girls that don't want to be seen in public without their makeup on.

With this in mind, I think that it's important to acknowledge that men are also subjected to certain social pressures. There seems to be an unhealthy obsession with having the 'perfect' physique. Men are also getting tans, styling their hair (even wearing makeup). In some cases, I think there's also more pressure on men to have a financially stable career so that they may support their families once they have them. While I agree that men and women should be treated equally I also think that feminism, to an extent, assumes that men are a unified entity and that they have it all.

I think I went slightly off topic with your question but never mind.

I'm a woman and i believe patriarchy oppresses both men and women by enforcing stereotyped gender roles.

women that still think that they are being oppressed by an imaginary patriarchy are a bunch of weak and worthless cowards - they should "grow some balls"
our culture has pros and cons for both sexes - you don't cure imperfection through onesidedness
