yeah u can say that greggs has a Task Culture when it comes to their Corporate culture. They began as a family business and still today they work together and grow together just like real families and they all work towards a shared vision of becoming number one for sandwiches and savories so these factors tell us that the culture in greggs is task and they work together as a team.

Porters Strategic Matrix
Greggs also seems to be following the Cost leader ship strategy according to the extract. They target a broader market as 99% of the uk households buy bread and also their products are relatively cheap when compared to its rivals perhaps because of the Backward vertical integration it has with its suppliers enabling it to absorb their profit margins and thus lower prices.

By the way study Decision tree analysis, we might get that cause we got CPA on Jan paper and study corporate culture as well..

Oooh this is useful! So do you think corporate culture, porters strategic matrix and CSR will come up?

Btw I'm confused because I thought it was porters generic strategies that involved cost leadership, product differentiation etc

It's another name for Porters Generic strategies..
and just get some key facts about Greggs, for instance they have currently 1671 stores in UK and hoping to expand an additional 600 stores. Plus they have weak coverage in South East and South West and North East Scotland so u can talk about this when ur explaining their expansions. They have reduced carbon emissions by 8.9% since 2010, their greggs foundation has raised over 20m (ponds) so far and every day their breakfast scheme provides 10000 children in deprived areas free healthy breakfast - this their CSR. They have 5 moment coffee shops in UK and they also have a wholesale arrangement with Iceland (frozen food specialists). They provide a profit share scheme where 10% of their profits is shared with their employees and in 2010 they gave 5.8m in profit share... These would be helpful!

I'm really not sure. Would you start by defining corporate strategy, then say what greggs corporate strategy is, then explain what porters strategic matrix is and then go on to explain how the matrix helps their corporate strategy (however I have no idea how it does...anyone???)

So not looking forward to this exam!

A01; define Corporate Strategy. Define Porters Strategy Matrix by including all aspects to it - so like cost leadership, differentiation, cost focus and differentiation focus.

A02; mention that greggs has a strategy of cost leadership. Mention Greggs corporate strategy - expansion through Greggs Moment and opening up new stores.

A03; Greggs enjoys benefits of EOS - through products being relatively cheaper than competition as they backward integration with suppliers - whole sale agreement with Iceland - thereby they have a cost leadership approach

Expansion has made Greggs work on better quality of products and more creative/innovative bakery products - sources of competitive advantage - differentiation approach

A04; Differentiation is difficult to maintain if competitors such as Tesco Bakery open stores selling similar products to Greggs

Differentiation requires an increase costs that may not affect uniqueness - this thereby threatens Greggs expansion -opportunity costs.

Hopes this helps a little

Not sure about this point but an over reliance on Iceland supplying them may affect Greggs ability to sell at relatively cheaper prices to its consumers if, for example, the supply of wholesale is affected by the weather causing Iceland to increase the price of the agreement or worse, the deal has to be cut off.

yeah i get the point..
Has anyone got predictions for what will come up? Also, what is a good way of memorising all the formulas?

Is it likely that there could be a question where it gets you to draw the critical path analysis/decision tree? If there is, I am screwed! :frown:

These are my predictions for this June 2014 exam

1. CSR
2. CPA
3. Ratio analysis
4. VAT implication on Greggs

Note: It is ok to memorise the ratios but at the same time you should be able to comment on it, so without understanding, what each ratio means is quite important.

Hope this helps !
