Do I have the right to take a book back to Waterstones?

I bought a book from Waterstones. Inside of this book, someone has underlined words on a couple of pages with a black pen. Can I take this book back and say I no longer want the book because I have discovered that someone else has written inside of it? I have the receipt

When did you buy it? And if you haven't done it then just be adamant, if they refused to give me my money back then I'd just never shop there again tbh.

Around 2 weeks ago. I will say I bought it as a gift. I guess it's all down to the temperament of the person I speak to and if they're nice. The thing is, the spine of the book is creased, as I have read some of the book and there are a couple of obvious scratches on the front cover - as I threw the book on the floor one night. :frown:

It'll be up to the manager if they take it back although if it's a recent purchase; they shouldn't have any quips with taking it back.

Did you buy it in that condition? It's just that, the book looks like it's been used quite thoroughly. I don't know much about it but it does look like it's been used quite a bit.

Just to check, it wasn't from their pre-owned collection was it? Waterstones near me sells quite a lot of them, particularly around this time of year as they offer a buy-back service for students, and the pre-owned books aren't always especially well-labelled.

Nope, unfortunately it was not from the pre-owned section. So, if I am not allowed a full refund, can I sell the book back to them for a lesser amount?
