St Mark's Residence

I am finishing up my 1st year of research post grad here and I can tell you St. Marks is actually a very beautiful place to live for postgrads. The rooms, bathrooms and kitchens are modern and very comfortable. There are also full size washer and dryers in each flat so no need to pay for laundry. The common room is quite popular for students to relax and hang out - there is table tennis, vending machine, a small gym and a business centre for printing and computer use. It is literally 7 min from the campus. It is well secured and I feel safe here. The grounds are well kept and very beautiful. The residence staff are all friendly. Your trash is taken from your kitchen on a daily basis. My only negative is the constant slamming of doors - which is minor and I am sure if it bothers you and you discuss it with your flatmates they will understand.

I am also applying for St. Mark's this year, I am starting my master at Leeds University Business School next September; my only concern about staying there is the security, not inside the Residence, but in the Street and the Woodhouse area around that you have to cross to get in and out of St. Marks and to and from the University, specifically St. Mark's Street. Is it safe? What can you tell us about this?

Are the people living there polite? What is the ratio between International and EU ? (If you can say )

I think that in general people are polite. Most people kinda go about their business but I often see groups of friends hanging out outside, tossing frisbees, playing football and having picnics on the grass - especially now that it is warm :-) There are also flat parties but not very often. The common area is also quite popular with students sitting chatting and playing table tennis.

I can tell you everyone is not just stuck in their rooms - I often have to close my window from all the chatting and laughing outside. lol

There are more international students (about 70% of the population) but I have also seen allot of EU and UK students around.

I have always felt safe on the specific streets that you have mentioned. The Woodhouse area that takes you from the Uni to St. Marks Street is mostly busy with lots of students going back and forth all day and into the evening so you are never really 'alone' walking there. St. Marks Street that takes you to the residence is also often busy with students in the day but a bit more quiet as it gets later into the evening. I personally don't know of anyone who has experienced any issues walking back and forth between uni and st. marks.

However I would always suggest to use common sense when returning home late esp. alone to arrange a cab that will take you right to the gate of St. Marks.

Thank you for your enlightening post on the St.Marks residence. I am an international PG student and have applied to St.Marks accommodation for the 14/15 academic year. I wanted to inquire about the IT Policy concerning internet access at the accommodation, but i haven't yet got a reply to my email sent to the official accom emailid. Could you tell me;
1. Is internet access provided through wifi or a wired connection?
2. What is the IT policy regarding bandwidth speeds/download limits ?
3. Can i download software online and access online gaming websites (http://store.steampowered.com/)? Or is it advisable for students to get their own modem/internet plan for downloads/heavy internet usage?

Yes thank you , i really appreciate the time that you spend replying to all of us. I choose St.Marks because its only for postgraduates and therefore i am expecting a more pleasant time in this residence compare with other residences that most of them would be occupied by undergraduates, whatever that means

There IS a difference lol. In St. Marks you can absolutely tell its all postgrads - the students are very mature and although there is socialising the students are serious and focused - you will love it here.

What all are the facilities in the room for the St. Mark's residences? Like do they provide bedding stuff and everything? and do you have the proper ventilation and cooling facilities? (Fan's or AC's in there) what all essential do you need to move in?

hey, you seem to know a bit about the postgrad accom - i was wondering if you had any idea which uni accommodation has the highest % of home/eu students? and maybe which one seems to have the most chilled postgrads? i mean i wanna work hard but i dont want it to get boring thanks!!
