Do male and female sports players deserve to be paid the same?

Absolutely.

I never really see this point getting made, and I think it's a very good one.

If one can argue that women are "doing the best they are genetically capable of, therefore deserving of equal pay", then surely a genetically non-sporty man could argue the same, as he is "doing sport to the best of his capability".

Well no because obviously it's about being top of the field for your sex...

In my opinion the likes of football is disgustingly overpaid anyway. But like has been said, if the woman's sport is less popular then it should be paid less. Makes sense. But it should still be a relatively decent earner, otherwise it'll act as too much of a deterrent and will make it even less popular.

On a side note, this is why I like eventing, show jumping etc, both females and males compete together.

Because there are millions of people to do those unskilled jobs. If Manchester United need someone to empty the bins or sell programmes outside the stadium there will be an endless stream of people to choose from regardless of what terms they offer. However if they need a Central Midfielder to play for their first team... you see what I mean?

Supply and demand.

What if I said that I believe than everyone should get a living wage no matter how 'disposable' they are because people aren't commodities to be bought or sold but humans with lives and families and dreams?

Yeah. Because our society is inherently unequal and if your rich/white/aesthetically pleasing/straight/cis/have parents who 'know somebody' etc you're more likely to achieve than those who aren't.

They should be paid by the amount of revenue they pull in where men clearly get more viewers/attention in most cases.

Same argument goes for why women pornstars/strippers are generally paid more than men. Because they pull in a larger audience.

Supply/Demand.

Haven't read the other replies, but /thread.
Every time a thread such as this comes up I despair at how little people understand basic economics. It should be compulsory for everyone to take economics classes to a certain level so that they don't make moronic politically motivated statements such as the ones that fill this thread.

That seems like a really strange reason to like a sport...

For what reason?

Because it creates inequality.

Nope. You may have noticed how civilization hasn't collapsed with the introduction of a bit of social democracy.

Because it creates inequality.

There's nothing wrong with inequality. It creates the incentive function to drive individuals to achieve financial success and boosts economic growth in the process. Besides taking a look at the UK statistics, ever since the rich became wealthier, there's been a correlation with the poorest in society also having increased income.

Capitalism is about letting the market decide what to produce to maximise investment returns which at the end of the day benefits the whole of society. The richest are most probably the risk takers in said investments and accrue the most monetary returns. However, that being said our progressive tax system helps re-distribute that wealth to the poorest in society to maintain acceptable living standards for most.

Capitalism isn't necessarily a bad thing. The whole concept takes into account peoples desires and utilises incentives to create for a more efficient and hand-working economy.
I'm finding this thread very interesting seeing it from both sides. To be honest though I think sport in general is a very male dominated profession from any level, whether it be coaching, officiating, competing, medical/sport science etc. Until there is a higher participation rate and more interest in female sport, there is no chance of the gap between male and female athletes closing. As long as more people remain disinterested the wage cap will continue. I will say though what I find interesting is how popular university sport especially football for both male and females are in the United States. Female sports draw in huge crowds.
Also personally, this is why volleyball is one of my favourite sports to compete in as well as watch.

How is that going to work? Pay terrible players big money to play in front of empty stadia?

What do you mean terrible players? Most sports women I know have good work ethic and just because they can't play competitively against men doesn't make them terrible.

I've never studied any econ past AS and even I know this is a special kind of stupid

If female sport was well advertised, given as much broadcasting attention with women receiving quality training, I couldn't see why they couldn't receive big pay too like in Tennis. The way men's Football has grown in popularity the last 60 years and gone to surpass cricket, to the point where footballers are no longer seen as working class men trying to earn a bob, can be used to an extend as a blueprint on how to market and expand women's football and other female team sports.

I didn't say it was lol.

It's strange that it would even come into it at all. I watch men's football and not women's because men's is so much better. If women's was the far superior product then I would prefer that. It's nothing to do with their gender, because I don't think someone's gender is a reason to like them more.

This

If I'm watching sport I wanna see the fastest, most jacked up, roided out of their mind superhuman athletes competing at the best possible level of performance and skill. Who cares about anything else
