Will be making friends difficult for me?

Well I am a person who doesn't drink at all nor eat meat ( only fish and vegetables) so I am some how a vegetarian. I am an international student and I haven't visited the UK ever in my life. I am afraid that it would be difficult for me to make friends or hang out with friends because from what people are telling me is that all the people at university do is to go bars and pubs. I don't have any problem going to a pub as long as I dont be humiliated or laughed off by my friends since I dont drink. Do you think guys that I would struggle?

Thanks a lot!

You my friend are not vegetarian, you are pescatarian.
Also, why don't you drink? Most societies I know of will typically head to the bar after for a talk between people etc...
Societies are a great place to meet people with similar interests.

Firstly, don't lose your values just to fit in.
Secondly, think about marks not mates.
Third, there have to be people like you with whom you can bond.
Lastly, don't worry about it.

Well I think I forgot to state that I am a Muslim, and to be honest I think that even worries me more! Most of my friends tell me that I might be left out as I dont drink nor I eat meat that is not cooked in an islamic way.

Marks are my priority for sure, but as I am new to the UK lifestyle and weather, I fear that without friends I might fall into depression and not be able to continue my course or even affect my grades which eventually would put me into more depression:s-smilie:

More depression? Are you already depressed? And never go in thinking this way. I know how you feel, for long time I was only Indian and brown girl in school and around lots of whites and I had to fight a lot with boys and girls and work harder is all. Now I live in a big city for Uni and it's great, will your Uni be in a big diverse city?

Anyone who asks you more than once why you don't drink and laughs at you for it is a loser.

Talk to people and you will find common interests and plenty of friends - if culture or religion is a barrier, which isreally quite unlikely, there will probably be an Islamic society where you can meet other Muslims.
Since when is not eating meat a hindrance?
Drinking could be an issue because it is a social thing but, not much of an issue. Most people go to the bar, you can still go (am I not correct in assuming) and simply just get a juice, coke or water.
I only drink socially (when out with mates) and will VERY rarely drink by myself because I view drinking as more of a social event and less of something you do yourself unless your dying for a beer, cider etc... so, it is a good reason to meet up but isn't a necessity to do so, nor take part in it.

Just join a society or make friends by socialising at the beginning of the year.
Most people at uni will talk and want to get to know each other at the beginning of the year, best thing to do is just go with it. I actually ended up going to uni late (missed like 3 days because I got my start date wrong...) and ended up talking to someone who also started late, then also ended up meeting some more mates, made friends with his mates etc...

Socialising and making friends isn't hard unless you are one of those socially awkward people.

Most likely it would be either London or Aberdeen.

I used to drink. Had a massive alcohol problem in my late teens and used to go around getting in fights, sleeping around, getting arrested so quit and never looked back!

Been sober for about a year and a half and it has absolutely no impact on my social life. I go out the same amount as everyone else but instead of drinking beer, I drink juice. If anything, not drinking improves your social life because you don't make an idiot of yourself and do things your regret whilst drunk. You won't get laughed at, there are a lot of people out there that don't drink and that number is rising for some reason.

If you can be confident without alcohol then you'll have absolutely no problem

I can go to a bar with no problem but as I said I would worry if people would reject me as I am not like them or so

You should be fine in a multicultural place :yep: Just focus and be yourself, as that is what I told myself in a new situation.

Hassani, i think it would be of interest if you could tell us a little more about yourself i.e where are you from and what will you study?

I guess it can be easy to assume or come to believe that the student population of Britain spends most of its time in bars and socialising rather than actually doing much studying.

I live close to Manchester. As you will know it has probably the biggest student campus and population outside of London. I walk/drive/pass through studentville often.

I see students of all cultures and races. Sure some are hanging out in bars and getting lashed. Generally i would perceived them to be mostly white, indigenous, European. I also see lots of Asian students walking about and generally, they wont be getting lashed in bars. They will just be chatting, with friends, shopping, doing other stuff.

There are lots of people in the UK who dont drink and may be veggie/pesci and indeed muslim or another religion.

Sure it must be daunting to come to a foreign country but try not to worry, just be yourself ,study hard and make the most of it.

Well I currently live in Jordan (country in the middle east) and I dont find it hard to socialize with people. My school is a private school and most of the students in it tend to have a similar lifestyle to the UK. I love hanging out with friends like chatting, watching a movie etc.... I will be hopefully studying medicine in either Aberdeen or London, the grades will determine that, so the marks will be my first priority in uni but I believe hanging out with friends from time to time is very important in order to be able to stand the pressure and be able to continue in such difficult course.

Hey Hassani, don't worry you'll find lots of students here from the Middle East, especially in London. There isn't a shortage of places to go or things to do that don't involve drinking (or eating meat!) I had no problem whilst I was studying, and I was in a similar situation to yourself. Join lot's of societies at your University including the International one and you'll be sure to meet people similar to yourself.
