Yeah I really liked it. It was quite sad it times too. To think about it, it may sound a bit creepy an old guy mailing a young girl but it never once came off as creepy. I wouldn't say it was a kids film though as it deals with quite mature subjects at points in the movie. Yeah I would say it deserves to be in this competition. I would have to check my imdb account to be sure but I'm sure I gave it either 8 or 9 out of 10.

I didn't get involved, no. I maybe should have done because there are some parts I don't agree with. For example, I would argue that Full Metal Jacket is a better film than Apocalypse Now but it didn't make the Wartime/Western list. Plus, there must be animated films that are better than How to Train your Dragon (although admittedly I haven't seen How to Train your Dragon). Airplane should have made it on to the comedy list too. My favourite film, Oldboy, didn't make the list either. Overall, it's a pretty good list.
43. Not bad, but not great.
I was glad to see The Green Mile on the list. That's my all time favourite movie :smile:

A World Cinema category would've been pretty cool. Seven Samurai, Magnificent Butcher and City Of God could've made their way onto the list.

As far as war time films go, there were a lot that weren't on the list. I've always loved Hamburger Hill, and We Were Soldiers Once was also a corker IMO. Also, no Great Escape, Where Eagles Dare, or Guns Of Navarone? Madness :tongue:

IMHO it's a piece of over-rated crap anyway, horribly directed, woefully written and really confusing... It's the kind of film that you feel is trying to not take a juvenile and simplistic approach, yet there is a genuine moment in it where a Neo-Nazi skinhead renounces his ways because, through doing laundry with a black person in prison, realises that black people are people too.

It's sickening, trite, and not at all the mature film dealing with racism that is promised. I recommend "Do The Right Thing" as a much better film actually dealing with the theme.

I have to agree that Oldboy (the original, not the recent American remake) should have been added. Its one of the very few films that has left me gobsmacked and speechless.

26, don't tend to watch old movies (aside from Forrest Gump and Shawshank) seen all but mary and max in animation, but none of the horror/thrillers

City of God is great. I've seen Seven Samurai but it was years ago and I can't remember it. I'm going to be completely honest and admit I haven't seen seen any of those war films you mentioned :colondollar: - I'm not hugely in to war films but I liked Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Saints and Soldiers and a few others.

I think it would have been good to have a surrealist category (although I don't know if there's many people who are in to surrealism on here). Eraserhead, Un Chien Andalou etc.

I've vowed to never watch the remake - the original's great though and I recommend it to everyone (even though it's too disturbing for a lot of people so I probably shouldn't :tongue:).

Ahh so it's not the typical young person animation then like the others. Probably explains why not many have seen it.

I never read the plot to the film before I watched it. My bf put it on one night and I was expecting a martial arts style film or something like that instead so you can imagine what my face was like when I got to the shocking bits :eek::colondollar:

Go get involved now. This thread is in the movie madness subforum which pits movies head to head in battles to see which is best over the next 31 days resulting in a final "TSR most popular film" in 30 days time! There are 16 polls up at the moment to vote and discuss things in. :smile: 16 more go up Saturday.

Teh ranking were based off IMDB rankings then genres. There will always be some films missed off any list but you say overall it's pretty good so we're happy.

A foreign language category including City of god was discussed in the planning but it was cut to make way for animation. since this is a student site after all and more people will have seen the animations then they will the foreign films.

Well, what would you say is the best western film? One on the list? We based off IMDB rankings so not perfect but it covers 95+% of great films imo.

PS, go vote + debate these things in the threads. the 4 starting Western polls are up and running right now...
