Are blogs 'dead'?
I have been considering writing a blog for sometime now but there is one thing that is holding me back and that is whether there is a point in writing a blog anymore.
It seems as if blogs are barely visited due to other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and by social media sites such as YouTube. It seems as if people would rather watch a 5-10 minute video or read a short tweet or Facebook post than read an article.
To those who have a blog, how long have you been posting on your blog for and what is your average views per week/month and do you have a decent amount of followers?

I've started writing a student-orientated blog, and since my first post two weeks ago, I've had 203 views of my blog. Doesn't sound like much buts it's more than I expected, and likely to build once posting regularly. I don't think blogs are dead at all, but some people prefer the likes of youtube due to them being able to listen whilst multitasking I guess? Start writing and post about it in the forums it relates too

I've had a blog for 4 ish years and for a lot of that my updating has been patchy to say the least. Despite that I have over 20,000 views.
The one thing I'll say is that blogging isn't dead a long as you have a niche audience in mind. A student blog or a blog aimed at the online and self published writing community will be more successful than blogs with multiple topics that need an audience who prefer YouTube etc :-)
Blogs definitely aren't dead, you just need to be observant about how others have been successful before your numbers shoot up.
I'm not going to post it here since there's adult content, but my site has had upwards of 100K visits, and more than 4K followers.
Promos/giveaway (without being cheesy or looking like a fake competition), witty writing, trending topics, new info before anyone else has it... All gonna help. As well as licking the butts of other well-known bloggers.
Most importantly, you need a niche or theme for the blog. Mine is "feminism", so I write reviews of popular films, books etc. from a feminist point of view.

Can you post a link to your blog? Seems pretty successful.
I never knew having a Tumblr was considered to be a blog haha, if that's so I am definitely going to make one. Also nice blog, some really interesting posts.

Blogs, as a way of writing down your personal thoughts, are very much in decline.
However, academically, blogs or 'digital journals' are becoming increasingly the norm.

i have had a blog for around 2 years now, i started it cause a friend suggested starting a blog and i do enjoy writing. mine is based on astronomy and geography mainly and i used it to write articles to help me revise and it has also helped me get my uni offers! Because the articles i write are often based on my class notes and essays other geography students use it for revision too so my views vary depending on the time of year. around exam time i got around 120 views a day, my all time best for 1 day is 141 views and i have had a total of 9,810 views since i started it. I have just reached 60 followers, although i have a few followers who follow it through the updates on my twitter as well. I would say it is worth it, the benefits for me have been great, i have even had a few professors from plymouth university read it, it can take a while to get lots of views/followers, when i started it i sometimes had no views at all on some days, but as i advertise it on twitter, google+ etc, i gain more.
I don't think blogging as a whole is dead at all, I think that if you have a niche to write about (computer science/programming as an example :P ), your blog will be as popular as it would have been 5/6 years ago as long as you put enough work into it.
With regards to personal/life blogs, I think they have became less popular due to VLogs and YouTube so having a popular blog about your own life will be difficult.

Our adult mentor has a blog that gets between 500 and 2000 hits per day so blogs are not dead. But unless you can see the stats page (we have!) never believe the number of viewers that people claim to have. Everything depends on how and where you promote your blog, obvious but often ignored, and we reckon that a specialist blog rather than a "what I did on my holidays" blog is the way to success!
I've only just recently started a blog myself and I have 101 views, although to be fair, I thought I'd just get about 30 or 40 and that's it. I'm still working out everything, but I feel like I'm doing well.
I'm an aspiring concept artist/illustrator, so I'm just posting my designs whenever I get the time to do it (or any doodles I do). I'd like to think my blog is like a journal, to show how I improve after every post.
