Why do people have unprotected sex if they don't want a baby?

To be honest, this. They're a mood killer (who the heck wants to stop in the middle to put a plastic bag around their dick?), they feel uncomfortable and stop sensation, and are really fiddly sometimes (i've lost more than one erection faffing on trying to find them in the heat of the moment, open it with moist hands, put it on etc.).

We stopped using them after a few weeks of being sexually active as she's on the pill. I still pull out anyway as it's harder to clean out when it's inside her as opposed to on her

I have never had sex with someone wearing a condom. I got tested and I'm clear. My boyfriend is also clear.
If you don't get tested and then proceed to have sex without a condom having not been tested, it's irresponsible.
The same goes for not using contraception. Fair enough, there might be negative side effects to the pill (mood swings, period irregularity, weight gain, etc) but not every pill will affect every woman the same way. Mine was prescribed to reduced period pain and my menstrual cycle has run like clockwork since day one - I even know the hour I'll start, aside from the couple of times when I've had my break and there's been no blood (I've never been pregnant). My sister used to faint due to severe period pain and was prescribed her pill after collapsing twice in one day. I have a friend who had to change hers as she was bleeding non-stop. The only really negative side effect is that it can increase the risk of stroke. If you have family history or have migraines or smoke, the prescription is harder to make. I've heard that the pill won't be prescribed to a chain smoker at the age of about 40+ as the risk is heightened, although this was a few years ago. Unfortunately, aside from condoms, birth control is something aimed at women, so we do have to take responsibility for ourselves.

I think it can take up to 3 months for the hormones in the pill to fully leave your system, this does not however mean it takes 3 months before you can get pregnant, in fact it only take 2 missed pills for that to become possible. What it means by 3 months to leave your system is that it takes (up to) that long for the woman's hormone cycle to regulate itself back to normal levels (though her levels once missing two pills are not subnormal enough to stop her getting pregnant)

Oh yeah I know you can still get pregnant if you only miss one or two pills. My point was in response to someone else that argued that pills weren't always convenient as a means of contraception as they can mess up your cycle.

no problem I also meant to say that the official line is that it only takes 3 months, but it can take longer and even then have some strange effects on your cycle. Humans are weird.

Aye fair enough, it's definitely the exception and not the norm though for it to effect your cycle in such a way it becomes inconvenient.

I suppose it depends on what you consider inconvenient :P For instance, if you have irregualr periods you may have worries of being pregnant. Or never knowing when you're due it's impossible to plan around. Especially if you have heavy or painful periods.

I define inconvenient as irregular in when the period comes (outside of the usual week or so) for a month or two.

ah see, that's more inconvenient than mine! I went on it for heavy and painful, then got too many headaches so stopped taking it. It's been weird ever since. But not so heavy, and no headaches! So, you know, I can deal with cramps and not knowing when it'll happen!

Did you go on the combined pill? If that didn't work out for you could try one of the other types such as the minipill. I had a friend who didn't mesh well with the combined pill but she never did bother looking for an alternative....that didn't go so well :')

Haha I think I'm going to leave it for a bit, the cramps aren't that bad, only occasionally am I curled up crying! I can generally get on with it pretty well now. And the headaches have stopped which was the main thing. I get migraines so I should never have even been put on that pill. My nurse is ****.

I have no idea of the effect any of the birth control methods have on migraines but your nurse certainly should have, it's great when you get a fantastic sexual health nurse though.

Yeah, I mean, maybe I just have a really low pain threshold, but I used to throw up My mum and I are quite similar in that respect, and when she was having me the nurses kept asking if she needed pain relief and it hadn't even reached her period pains yet. SHE WAS IN LABOUR WITHOUT PAIN RELIEF! That's insane. Boggled my mind! Anyway, it 2:41, I'm going to bed!

One of the main purposes. It's also used for pleasure, stress relief, socialising, weight loss etc.

People can lose weight, socialise, relieve stress etc other ways whereas there is only ONE way to create a child and keep the human race (or animal kingdoms) going. That was my point. So reproduction goes above everything else (especially from a Catholic perspective and I am one).

I don't understand why people have sex without anything to stop pregnancy if they don't want to have a child it's quite silly. I think people should stop complaining if they get a female pregnant or get pregnant. I don't believe in "accidental" pregnancy as they chose to have unprotected sex.
