Should there be an upper TSR age limit?

Everyone gets trolled and some point or another - I wouldn't let it bother you.

It shouldn't be discriminated based on age, that would be pointless. If we were all currently students on here, it would be much harder to get advice for things.
No.

I'm probably somewhere in the middle age-wise but I've known students in their 70s. It isn't a childrens' discussion forum, it's a student forum.

I find absolutely nothing 'weird' about people talking to others much older/younger than they are. It's quite depressing that anyone would think that; there's no logic behind it and it's quite insulting to older/younger people (depending on who holds the viewpoint) that they have nothing to say that's relevant to you. I have close friends ranging from late teens to late 50s, and they all bring something worthwhile to my life, it seems absurd (or panicky/hysterical) to think that people from different generations can't interact quite normally.

As others have said; Threads on topics such as tax, pensions, benefits and careers would largely go unanswered as students typically have little experience in those areas but will need further information.

These are clearly areas where older posters can add a lot of value.

However, would the same be said of more 'difficult' subjects? More mature posters have bags of life experience with, for example, relationships ... but would their help be just as sought after in those areas? Or maybe different rules can, and should, apply to certain topics?
Of course not. Anyone that has been to university will know that there are mature students in most classes, they made up about 25% of mine! I think this forum should reflect reality and so the voice of older students should definitely be heard.

OK, I'm not one for people asking about whether or not they should stay on or flounce from TSR, however I have a serious question.

As my ID implies I am older than most on here; I have helped out a few overseas students and parents with info, I spend a bit of time on the Movie section of TSR (helped the mods put together the Movie Madness competition) and like some other parents on TSR are able to view things from the perspective of being a graduate with children now at Uni. I also work with and have advised graduate recruits.

My understanding was that TSR was open to anyone connected to student life ... however I have been directly asked if I am "a paedo" for posting on this site.

Clearly I find this question distressing, however it made me wonder. Do you guys freak out at the thought of 'older' posters using TSR, regardless of their student connections? Should parents be banned? Should there be an age limit for TSR?

I would genuinely be interested in your thoughts.

Regards

I find that you had to go such an ordeal distressing as well!

Going back to your questions; no. I welcome people who are much older.
I joined when I was 19, I said I'd stop posting when no longer a student. I'm now 24 and still here :o:

yeah it definitely freaks me out, big time. there should definitely be an age limit, as well as a full identity and background check. I've got a strong suspicion that there are quite a few 60 year old men lurking on TSR, it makes me very uncomfortable not knowing. The age limit should be around 18 actually, anything older than that...just shouldn't be using TSR. University students are in my opinion too old to be using a website like this because they should focus their time and attention on their studies (even though they're students, i think TSR is a bad idea because it allows students to procrastinate). Anyone who's not in school/college/university/higher education/postgraduate certainly shouldn't even be touching this site (why do they even use it if they're not actual students?). And people who have children...well...what can I say there...you obviously have some big real life responsibilities, certainly shouldn't even be thinking about using TSR, it's very taboo and extremely weird, you have more important things to do with your life. If I had children, I can't imagine ever doing something like this. Imagine if your children found out about TSR, would be extremely embarrassing indeed.

Interesting, I'd not looked and therefore not noticed them.

I'm really a little surprised that 'normal' and 'mature' students are not (in the minds of some) "allowed" to socialise.

Have a look at some of these:

There are some more, but I'm finding it hard to track them down.
I find parents asking questions on here weird. Their children should be the ones trying to find out the info, not them. And if their kids don't want to let them know stuff then asking is kinda a breach of trust. I'd be weirded out if my parents were on here talking to kids about uni when it's none of their business.

I agree with your point, but pretty much everyone is going to be at least 14 and most will be over 16 (A-Level starting age) and would probably object to being called children

Is this supposed to be a joke?

I must say I find it quite unsettling to think that some of the people who post on here and reply to my comments are 13 and 14 year old boys and girls. I feel very uncomfortable with that. I consider myself quite old at 22, I certainly wouldn't go up to start a conversation with a 13 year old in real life, so why shouldn't the same rules apply on an internet forum.

I believe so... After reading it about 5 times I think he's trying to basically say that no one should be on the forum cos everyone is too old, too young or needs to study, ie trolling. I think. I hope.

I do find it a bit weird when people in their 40s+ actively engage in discussion with people 20 years younger than them. If this happened in real life it would be a bit odd. However, I can see the benefits of having older members and they outweigh any negatives.

Really?? What sort of world do you live in? :s-smilie: I genuinely cannot comprehend how a 40+ man having a discussion with a 20 year old could possibly be viewed as 'a bit odd'..but that's just me.

Do you watch TV or politics, been to university? This actually happens like every single day..

I hope I don't come across as offensive as this was absolutely not my intention but I'm just so perplexed that you actually find it odd! I'm 25 myself and would most definitely actively engage in discussions with well ANY age really (I'm not saying here that I would just engage in any discussion but just pointing out that IF I were to engage, age would certainly not something I would care about). At the mentioned ages we are all adults!

20 wasn't the best number to use, I'll concede. Add on another 5 years and it is odd, so your incredulity is quite astonishing. You obviously feel very, very strongly about this.

Well most people starting their PhD or doctorate tend to be quite old, yet are still classed as a student... there are also quite a few masters and undergraduate students that are mature. Besides, there are many reasons why people might identify with the term 'student', and so use a site such as this.

No. I'm not even a student and I post here

Interesting.

Most parents will take an interest in what their children are doing, in a general sense that is and not micro stuff, are you saying that you would be uncomfortable with your parents wanting to research, say, your course, university, accommodation, city etc.?
