If you had no idea who Messi was and he took his top off, I'm not sure you would believe he's a footballer, let alone one of the best in the world.

No question whatsoever that Germany warrant being champions - they are by far the only top-quality team at the tournament, with quality players in every position, admirable players like Neuer, Klose, Goetze, Lahm, and Kroos (some of whom have already gone down in history, some - namely Neuer - who will). But the disappointment will remain that the most consistently outstanding sportsman I've seen will most probably have his legacy tarnished by a hugely underwhelming performance in a World Cup, and probably won't win one now.
