Advice to my fresher self

Scroll to see replies

This thread is making me so excited. All being well grades-wise, I'll be starting at Leeds this Sept. Good to know there are other options for having fun than going out drinking because I don't really drink and won't be drinking when I'm at uni! Gonna join a heap of societies and make use of the gym for sure. And study my bum off because I want to do really well.

One thing that worries me slightly: if there are problems with food being nicked (which I'm expecting) and washing up not being done and stuff (not the occasional plate, but a full on mountain of stuff so the sink is unusable, etc.). I don't want to be "that person" but I know it'll annoy me so what's the best way of handling it if it does happen?
Lose the shyness before fresher's week, not after the entire degree...
I'd imagine that talking to them sooner rather than later would be the best idea. Perhaps do it whilst you and your roommates are still getting used to things, so that it's more likely to become a habit. It'll be harder to talk to them if making a mess and nicking food becomes a habit for them.
Alternatively, you may just have to come to terms with the fact that some people are messy, and you may just have to live around them if possible.

Goddammit, really? I'm going to Warwick in September!

Awwww, Warwick is my first choice probs. I hope it is good in 2015 and not tame as a few others said.
And how was it like? Was it just standard clubbing/parties?

Yeah. I only spent a year there though. I wanted to change my course and they didn't offer it at Warwick and tbh I wasn't happy with the uni in general. I got blinded by prestige and reputation. Warwick was definitely what I was looking for in terms of university. That being said, I know loads of people that love it there.

It's definitely what you make it in terms of parties and clubbing. There aren't endless possibilities for nights out but there's definitely enough. I came from London so I don't think I'm really qualified to give a proper analysis as anything would seem crappy in comparison. If you want to know more, feel free to PM me!

There seems to be so much negativity about relationships at university which is slightly worrying to me. Ive been with my boyfriend since 14 (will be 5 years together this December) and I always believed that we would make it through uni. We'll be going to different universities so its not like we'd be together 24/7 but he's my best friend as well as my boyfriend and I generally spend quite a large amount of time with him. I really hope uni isnt going to ruin us :frown: surely not every university relationship ends up failing?

I went to Leeds Uni on an open day.

The gym's sooo nice  You'll have a great experience there.

Does it depend on the people or uni? If a lot of people are really into it then wouldn't it be quite big in the uni?

I guess a bit of both. But my uni didn't organise that many nights out in freshers. I guess you can always go out to other stuff though if you'd like.
And don't feel like you just have to socialise with the people on your corridor or in your flat. If they aren't party people, other people will be haha
Put yourself out there (I'm pretty much an introvert but met some of my best friends through saying hi in a practical or lecture)

Acknowledge early on that your preferences arent the same as everyone else's - This sounds silly but it is very easy to get sucked into the whole going out every night and getting drunk... when it really isn't you (Same vice versa if you happen to join a studious crowd  )

Most people have a little bit of homesicknesses -- Talk to your flatmate, they are probably going through the same thing.

If you want to do it something, make it happen -- Applies to cinema, shopping, ice skating, beach.. If you ask, a lot of people will say yes

Go to as many society/sports 'taster' sessions as you can, they are pretty fun and you get to try without paying a joining fee.

Friendship groups change a lot so if you find yourself stuck with people you don't particularly like anymore -- Dont worry - Uni has a way of providing a lot of opportunities to make more friends

A lot of the stuff in 'the secret life of students' show on C4 is (IMO) accurate and the producers have done a reasonably good job of balancing the fun side of uni with serious issues. It is definitely worth a watch before arriving at freshers.

Ooh, gap year, nice one! I did five year on my gap year... very ready for Uni now, haha! Best of luck
I pined for my home-town friends and ended up having a rather lonely and sad first year. Then I met somebody on my course who became very special and I ended up marrying him (I'm 25 now).

You really don't need to pack every item of clothing that you own.

I've been wondering about this - how much is enough? Do you need the extremes like from old rubbished clothes and walking boots to party dresses?
You don't need to pack too much at all. I didn't come with any fancy dress but I was able to create something with the clothes I have. You can take a few but that should be enough. With regards to clothes, so many students overpack which is sad. Pack according to season. Take a few autumn clothes and maximum of two coats. You'll go back home every few weeks or at least at Christmas when you can drop off the clothes and take on winter clothes. You dont need to bring flip flops, shorts etc. You can get those when you return home for the Easter break which is before spring or summer.

You're assuming /everyone/ goes home on a regular basis, I went home for 5 days over Christmas and that was it. But I do take your point about not bringing many clothes, In first year I brought 2 bags of clothes that I haven't worn in years ontop of the clothes that I did wear which was a mistake, I ended up throwing all my old clothes away at the end of the year to save up space.
