Because they're not dependent on each other?

Being top 10 =/= automatic russell group.

and vice versa.
Just because it's in the top 10 doesn't mean it has to be in the Russell Group... Look at Durham, another top 10, that isn't in the Russell Group either. RG are just research intensive universities. Some of them aren't even top 20 let alone top 10.

Because they are not big enough.

The Russell Group is a group of large research universities.

With the exception of LSE which is a specialised institution in fields with low research costs, all of the others have more than £65M of research income. Bath has a little over £30M.

No, I did not say that.

I said that they were not a large enough research university to join an organisation of large research universities.

You don't have to be in the Russel Group to be a good university. It's a group of the largest research universities that joined together to protect their intrests. It is not a definitive indicator of how good a university is. Just like the Ivy league in the US is not a distinct group of all the best universities in America (although the ones in the league are among (if not) the best) it is an athletic conference.

I mean Durham and St andrews are both good universities, but they're not in the Russell group mostly because they're so small. They aren't big enough places and as such not big enough universities to have a huge research budget.

Also, the Russell Group was formed back in 1994, and Bath has grown quite a lot since then and improved in rankings etc.

Lazy much?
I think the points have been proven, to the original asker: if you like Bath so much, then go there.

Or maybe I just don't see the point in typing out what you've already posted, and I was simply directing the poster to your very helpful post.

Sensitive much?

Paranoid much?

I was joking in the first place.
PS: If it was helpful, why don't I get the +1?
Also, league tables aren't everything, and a lot of the criteria they use to form them are very subjective.

Bath, Durham, St. Andrews etc. are all in the 1994 Group instead - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Group, similar principle to the Russell Group except for smaller institutions.

How have you come to the conclusion that Bath is a top 10 university? Through media league tables that are flawed with bias from student satisfaction surveys and contradicting criteria amongst various newspapers? That is a naive narrow-minded view you will overcome in a few years when you have more life experience and know how it all works.

In my opinion, having graduated from Nottingham 10 years ago, and having worked for 4 blue chip firms, I can tell you that Bath is regarded as highly as any university outside of the super elite G5 (Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL). To get invited into the Russell Group, a university must demonstrate research excellence across a broad range of subjects, ideally including Medicine and/or Dentistry (almost all RG unis have a medical school).
