The 'sick of living with my parents' thread

Yeah the economy sucks for young people, the housing market sucks for young people, etc. One of the main things that depresses me is having to live with my mum because of the jobs situation here. There is absolutely nothing in my crappy town at the moment, but I'm here to ask about people's experiences of having to live with their mum in their twenties.



Sick of having to hide my condoms, my mum reorganising my room, cleaning my room, moaning about how I'm in my room all the time, the lack of privacy... sick of it. There's also no way of inviting friends over for a drink and smoke and good times. I tell her not to go in my room while I'm gone and that I'll clean my room and she goes in anyway and roots through my stuff. I feel 15 and I'm 26!



I really have been neglecting my studies lately that I've just started a few months ago because I've been so desperate to find a job and finally move out!! Hopefully it will be soon!

The people who say 'why don't you just move out?' I can't go anywhere until I can get another job Without one there's no way I can go anywhere!

I've got a job. I stay with the parents. I don't pay any rent. I get free food. I hardly have any expenses. I have no idea why you want to live away from the parents!

What does living with your parents have to do with your mental age?
Currently back at home for Summer after getting my first taste of independence in my entire life during my first year of university. Come from a small, boring former mining town with a population of roughly 30,000 town with nothing to do, no job prospects beyond probably working in Asda because there's nothing else here. Hate my life back at home and never want to come back after I graduate from university and I'm not a family person, not close to my family or anything. I'm a city person, love the atmosphere of a city, the liveliness, multiculturalism and varied languages, religions, races, people etc and aspire to move out to a city when I graduate and get a job. About to go into second year of university and secured myself a 50 week contract so I don't have to come home for as long during the next summer holidays which is great.. I'll still have to come home for 3 weeks at the most though which is a pain. I just got back from my university city, just turned 19 and parents are considering charging me rent to live in the house I've grew up in for 18 years even though I don't even have a job or any income at all besides student loans and even though I'm paying for my own food with left over student loans from last year. I also was at university for 9 and a half months and during all that time I only ever went home for 5 days in total during the Christmas holidays because I hate going back home.

I lived on my own for a good 4 years but had to move back due to unemployment. Now I'm back at uni studying at phd level. All I need is a pt job to supplement my income and then I can leave!

Also from a town of around 30,000 with Asda or Mcdonalds being the main job prospects and actually lived here throughout my four year degree at a university which is 30 miles way. Having done this for the last four years, I have no tuition fee loan, have also worked since the age of 16 so no need for maintenance loan and all the money I save goes on petrol, clothes, nights out, food out and holidays/travelling every year. I also have not missed out on uni life being that my parents are so laid back. This may sound spoilt but in opting to live at home to save on costs, my parents fully accepted I had to go out and socialise and now my job is actually in the city where the uni is.


HOWEVER, at the age of 22 and recently graduated, I am now moving out for my masters to the city where I did my undergrad and I feel like even though I won't be able to spend freely as much, I will gain aload more real life experience and budgeting and in a way, money can't buy that. It's being reported in the press than people are 30 still living with their parents whereas I simply saw it as a means to an end and exceptionally generous of them.

My advice to the original poster would be if you want to move out that much, get a job aswell as studying and start saving. Try Gumtree/Craigslist

I get that and it's after graduating that I'm finally moving out but if your parents didn't charge you so much and gave you more space/independence when you were at home, you wouldn't feel so resentful to moving back if you really needed to after graduating.

I'm with you on the city life' thing though, I think coming from such a small town where everyone knows everyone makes you WANT and appreciate the complete opposite and that's where I plan on going for jobs also.

There is such a lack of privacy, I have to hide condoms and stuff in a lock drawer or my parents will inevitably find it and my mum keeps criticising my looks. I'm so glad the rent on my new flat starts in august as it gives me an excuse to leave early.

I dread graduating uni because then I'll have to move back home. Maybe I can save in the next 2 years and I pray I can get a graduate job or onto a postgraduate so I don't have to move back in here.
Ah only today was reminiscing/moaning about how when I first started working I'd cough up £100 a week board and the rest was basically pocket money to squander however I liked..Now I've a mortgage...Still wouldn't ever go back though..

I lived at home though uni, but my heart does go out to those poor buggers who had that taste of freedom and independence then had to go back to living with their folks.

I'm exactly the same. Back from uni for the summer. Slowly going crazy.I can move in to my new flat in September but I rang my landlord up and asked if I could bring the date forward so I'm going back in exactly a month.

I've got the same problems, no privacy, knocking is optional, moving things around and touching my stuff (that are not a mess just organised a different way to what my mum likes), terrible food, constantly criticised for eating healthily and going to the gym as apparently I take it to the extreme, the list is literally endless.

I'm going to make sure I get a job and start earning some good money so I have enough for a deposit on a house, so I'm set as soon as I leave uni, I'm practically moving away permanently anyway as I have a 12 month contract for my flat.

Lucky you can move back in August, so early! The earliest I can move into my 2nd year accommodation is 6th of September which is still over 7 weeks away. :mad: Got a 50 week contract to look forward to though so only will be coming back home for the summer for 2/3 weeks next year.

Tbh, I would rather live at home for as long as possible to such a point where I'm financially able to become independent. There are so many people who I went to school with who are now living off benefits in council houses with 3 children to different dads..... I would rather this (my room) than some run down apartment with students and/or council house. My life at home is extremely comfortable. Also, my education is of paramount importance.

Comfortable living > budget living
