living in halls at age 25... weird or not? :/

Being totally indecisive and after some advice.

Starting first year psychology at Swansea in September, trying to decide on what to do about accommodation. I'm 25 and right now I rent a room (also in Swansea as I've lived here a while anyway) in a house at pretty much the same price as the on campus accommodation is. The only thing is where I am now, I can stay all year including holidays, and going for uni accommodation means having to find somewhere else to live for a few weeks which is kind of a pain. On one hand I don't want to miss out on the experience of living in halls but on the other hand it might make life awkward for certain parts of the year... Also being 25 I don't know if that's "too old" to get on with a bunch of people who'll be a few years younger than me. Basically HELP! Any advice seriously appreciated

Personally, the "experience" of living in halls isn't all that much. Fire alarms at stupid hours, noise from up to 200 other people keeping you up rather than just a few people, food theft, drunken banging on your door when people return, if you're really unlucky other thefts/damage.

If you're an outgoing person living close to campus, and other students, you'll be fine and just miss out on the bad stuff. If you're not so outgoing, you might hate halls anyway.

Hello, I am 31 and I am planning on living in halls rather than commuting for over an hour. I live at home with my parents. The main reason that I want to live in halls is to try and live independently.

I would do whatever you feel most comfortable with. The most important thing is to do is to socialise with the people in your class. It might help if you can find a way of meeting or talking to someone on your course.

I have been very lucky that I have already met a couple of people who might be on my course. It was just a coincidence that I kept bumping into them because we liked the same courses. There was also an open day for Firm and Insurance choices. I met a few more people there too. :smile:

I'm 25 and starting at MMU inSeptember. I thought I would feel too old to move into halls, but as the time gets nearer, I'm really excited about it! :biggrin:

I will be 31 when starting uni too! I aim to live in halls as I'm moving far away from where I live in Birmingham. :-). I would request to be put in with a mature group, and I feel its an exciting experience anyhow.

im 22 but I feel that I am a bit old even because everyone seemed young at the open day, I mean I look younger but I don't feel it because at the end of the day, it is going to be a different experience for older starting students I think
because some of us older ones have more experiences etc. and view stuff differently

Hey I'm from Swansea going to Uwe Bristol am jealous as you have the beaches on your doorstep, Gower round the corner and the infamous and brilliant Wind. St Wednesday student night brilliant :tongue:

And as for halls I'm 23. I'm not worried about not fitting in as I have friends coming with me who are 21 lucky accident. So I have their support. But more the case I can cook, clean and take care of myself. And am just worried that 18 year olds won't be able to and I might become de facto leader taking care of the running of the kitchen etc which is not what I want to do. but other than that after my access course where one of my closest friend was an 18 year old there isn't all that much difference.

I lived in halls in my first year at 25, thank god I did. Made loads of friends and had one of the best years ever. No one really cares about age at uni, all my friends range from the ages of 20-30. I remember my younger friends often telling me off for saying I was too old to go out 2 nights in a row last year!

In fact im on holiday right now with three of my mates from uni who are all younger than me.. i would say go for it and good luck to you.

This has all been incredibly helpful, thanks guys! I decided to apply today because if nothing else I can always still reject the offer and stay as I am... But now I've actually applied I'm quite excited :smile:

I requested to be put with mature students if possible so hopefully that'll help but I think I'm going to go for it no matter where I get offered a place to stay. I think it'll be good for me to have the experience and to meet new people.

Personally, I would stick with where your living now. You already have accommodation. So would not move to somewhere where you will have to find somewhere else to live too. I am 26 and going to be starting uni this year too. Although I got on really well with the 18 year olds in my level 3 class, living with 18 year olds would be a completely different story.
I would feel out of place, I've been there, done that. I just want my degree, but it's a personal preference :smile:

Still waiting on mine! I think I applied a bit late. Preseli is the en suite accommodation isn't it? I think that was my first choice. We'll see though I think I've got a few weeks till I find out, I get my place at the same time as the A level results.

I lived with a 27 year old in halls. It's all good as long as you go along with everything.

If you don't think you'll be able to handle freshly turned 18 year olds going out and coming back at 4am, then you might want to look at alternatives.

I'm 24 and I'm going back to uni in September, living in halls (I chose not to for my first degree so it will be a new experience). I'm a bit apprehensive about the age gap too but this thread has made me feel a lot better. Good luck for September :biggrin:

Yes, my room has the ensuite bathroom and I also chose the mature requirement (no noise between 11pm and 8am). I'm on the top floor which is good because it means no noisy footsteps coming from above!
