Why do people lie online?

I don't understand why people lie online like their name... Or not ell people their name or age... It's annoying when I try to make friends online and they don't tell me their name.... "Call me X."

when I first went online I was under 18 so fake names have a purpose

even for some anonymity until you can trust the person its handy to make up names etc..

after you trust them tho...most are and should be open

But what is sharing your name going to do ?!

Because I can't befriend the person I am talking to. I like making friends.

Why are you so keen on making friends online though. That's really odd. I sense ulterior motives. Sorry to say.

Well, I've made more friends online than I have in real life... I don't talk to people much.

hmmm first name is grand
but full name isnt..

generally id advise if youre over 18 to try to be open...

but if youre a kid probably best to lie

its only a name if they cant get over that..theyre too much hassle anyways p
Don't see the point in hiding your first name tbh. Yeah, don't tell the whole world your full name and where you live. Anybody I've befriended online, I've always known what their real name is and how old they are.
Erm... I don't see a problem.

No idea. People accuse me of it all the time but I have nothing to hide.

People who usually say 'I have nothing to hide' have ALOT to hide...

OP, surely you can understand why people lie?

I have my sources:ninja:
lying or using a username? On a game I used to play we all used game names, I think it was about 2 yrs or so after meeting did a few of us start using our real names or added one another on FB etc. Some people may feel safer not stating their age, for instance, I started playing an online game when I was 13 but I knew most people who played it were in their 30s... back when I was 13 you had it drilled into you not to reveal any information about yourself. I did encounter one or two creeps but most turned out to be pretty ok for old people

I have friends in RL that I don't know the ages of, it's never really came up into discussion. Age isn't really a crucial thing in friendship unless you were planning to do the dirty...

For the record, my first name is Alpha, my middle name is Dog and my surname is 0127. oops. that was a lie :colondollar: now we can't be friends :frown:
