Changing Bank Account

Hey everyone,

I have an account with HSBC and I've had problems with them for my whole first year of university. With me starting my second year in September I've decided to change my bank account to somewhere else. I just tried at the Co-op but was rejected for some reason! Need some help to know who to bank with.

Thank you.

You need to pay to access your credit file and find out why you are getting rejected, all back refer to the credit reference agencies. There like 3 of them, usually you can get a 30 day trial for free, instead of making your credit file worse them it is, all the problems with HSBC you had stays on your actual file for 6 years. On CreditExpert it tells you the best financial products for you like bank accounts and which ones you will be accepted for!

That depends on what you want

DO you want a student account? Or a "normal" account that has "high" interest, and also that perhaps come with freebies? How much money do you have to put away?

How much money CAN you put away per month?

Do you want huge overdraft (if student account)
If student account, do you want to get certain rewards, offers, etc... (ie: bribes) ?

I'd advise OP NOT to use CreditExpert, but rather pay the £2 fee to Experian and Equifax, to see the data that they have on you

You shouldn't pay to see your "credit rating" Check it out for free if you want at noddle.co.uk

The three companies are:

Experian
Equifax
Call Credit

You can check your call credit credit rating at noddle

Also, because there are three, if you're checked at experian, your "score" might be wildly different to companies that use Call Credit

On my facebook, someone was complaining that they couldn't get a 123 credit card, despite having a 900 and something credit score on Credit Expert...

I've never checked mine, aside from on noddle. I dont see the point, except perahps every 6 - 12 months, paying the £2 fee to make sure that all your information is up to date and accurate

Creditexpert, as a student i did the 30 day free trial took seconds to find out then i cancelled it middle of the month or you can just cancel your debit card and reissue. Its worth the money though as your paying for fraud insurance protection. They are lying to have a 900, santander run there own scoring internally 650 plus or £5k in tied up savings you will get a 123 CC.

You get fraud protection for free any way...
I just want a student account with a decent overdraft. HSBC keep on trying to charge me for no reason or not paying out direct debits when theres actually cash in my account. I've checked my credit report before and there was nothing wrong with it. Also I've been working all summer so I don't understand why I wouldn't get a student account?

You don't on a typical high street account its an add on. I had a company do multiple credit checks on me which i didnt recognise contacted credit expert and they disputed it for me they did the leg work. It was removed in a month. Btw a statutory report doesn't show everything its so basic. You need to see a few years worth of history to see the 0-8 each month for each credit account you have open. Any 1-2 wont show up extensively on that statutory report. Neither will electronic searches, even opening a betting account it doesnt show on that statutory credit report and it would hinder your application for a current account.

Also you can have a 900 and have no available credit to borrow hence the rejection!

Every single bank will have some form of fraud team, which they give to you for free. At the end of the day, your money is "their" money, and they want that money back..

No it doesnt, but it's also not worth paying for your credit report. Pretty much every one at MSE recommend against paying for your credit report, aside from the statuary ones

If that's the case, Id dispute it...

You could try either Santander or Halifax if you cant get a student account with HSBC or Co Op

Santander give you a free rail card as well, so there's that! For me, I can't get a SAntander student account (because with the account I have, you're not allowed to be a student )

Not at all, because with identity fraud protection, you might be banking with various financial institution. Taking something out under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, could be anything from car finance, insurance finance, phone contract etc. The bank has no part to play the decision makers to the file are the credit reference agency which has the choice to maintain a default against your name or to remove it.

http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/fraud_protection/identity_fraud

The police only forward it to the credit reference agencies and why would the bank intervene over someone setting up for example a payday loan in your name, lol. They wouldn't care one bit, even then with identity fraud protection its underwritten and carried out by a 3rd party. The banking code will cover you with money held by the institution, but if someone has used your details for something. Your the person that has to do the leg work to fix, with experian unless your paying for the cover they wouldnt repair it for you!

Would still rather get it for free:

Besides the OP just wants a student account

Likelihood is you will have it for free but not everyone has home insurance or credit card themselves. Some little kiddies still have an upgraded kids account or a bank account with a book. Fair point though, if you can get it for free why pay for it.
Might try santander, see what they offer.
