If somebody gets a degree in Mathematics would you class them as a Mathematician

Mathematics is such a complex field and it takes a special brain to be good at it.

If a graduate got even a 3RD in Mathematics, would you say they are a Mathematician?

I have a degree in Drama so my brain is FAR from Mathematics but if I got a 3RD in Mathematics I would be VERY happy ^_^

I'd say that if you have a job heavily involving maths (e.g. an actuary) or you're studying maths past undergrad level than you deserve being called a mathematician but in reality the word mathematician just means someone studying maths or very good at it (whether they study/ied it or not).
Yes.

I would say you're a mathematician from the moment you took interest in the subject:smile:

HAHAHAH I AM FAR from a Mathematician, I am just fascinated with it, there was a girl I used to hang and bang with she was a Science wizard in Chemistry and Physics and was a bit of a Mathematician in her own right. Sometimes I wonder why I kicked her aside. Only cos she never satisfied my needs sexually imagine that....

Maybe you should hook up with her again!
OK, you may not be a great mathematician, but a mathematician still:tongue:

Are you looking to follow up your fascination for maths with a degree? :beard:
You know how in games you rank from level 1 to a 100? I'd say that you'd only be 'qualified' to be called a Mathematician if you are near level 55. That is being in the middle of a challenging undergraduate degree and doing well.

True Mathematicians however are those who dedicate their lives to it - Researchers and Lecturers for example.
Yes, maybe years ago when only a tiny minority of people went to uni. But you would probably be looking at a first in maths at the very least to justify the title in an informal usage. Of course really you shouldn't be called a mathematician any more than you should be called a historian or psychologist until such time as you start a career where you aim to earn a living solely from studying that subject, i.e. a Ph.D.

Ah na she is gone long time she was Hindu her family was crazy. She was doing her entry for medical school me and her was VERY opposite she is/was a book worm that was shy and I was out going gym rat.

Nope I already have my degree in Drama. But I do respect those that are excellent in the science and mathematical field.

But I do want to know what are the subjects that are taught at a Maths Degree level obviously fractions are not taught ^_^

Yes MAYBE but to have that BRAIN to even finish the MATHS Degree with a 3rd or up for me you are a Math genius you can do!

Look at this Caucasian woman she did/doing a Mathematics Degree she was funny ahahhaa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs9aGVUZ3YA
You aren't really a true mathematician until you have a job as one and they are very rare most people specialise in an applied field and become a physicist or banker etc-I am even planning to become a meteorologist, there are few mathematicians.

So are Mathematic teachers at school Mathematicians?

What job classes you as a Mathematician? Rocket Scientist?

So that skill that you have from University with your MATHEMATICS Degree don't make you NEAR a Mathematician???

REALLY?????

So that skill you have you wouldn't be able to help somebody that needs help with a complex Mathematics homework??

Really???

A graduate from Oxford in Mathematics are not a Mathematician then? They are just a graduate. The skill they have in Mathematics means nothing. They are not a Mathematician till they have a JOB that says MATHEMATICIAN? ^_^ lol

People who do a job in Mathematics are Mathematicians(usually pure maths researchers) the rest are effectively scientists eg.physicists, engineers there are some financers though I think there is room for debate with those who are physicists as well as mathematicians like Stephen Hawking I think-you have to have a job in Mathematics not Science to class as one.I wouldn't really class Maths teachers as mathematicians just teachers really they aren't experts in the Mathematics field and do it for their living.

OH so to be a Mathematician you have to RESEARCH Maths?

RIGHT!

Hawkins the disabled guy that says God doesn't exist OH HIM! YEAH!

He is into real complex Science-Mathematical 5hit!

So Mathematical Science TEachers in schools with a PHD are not Mathematicians they are just a poor man's or poor woman's Mathematics person?

Okay so what makes you and EXPERT at Mathematics?

What could Hawkins for example tell me about Fractions and Percentages that would put him in a league above a Mathematics teacher? ^_^
i think it is rather rare to see a mathematician in this day and age compared to centuries ago (excluding university lectureres and affiliated etc)

mate, you need to calm down a little bit. Its 3am....perhaps past your bedtime?
Huh... you see I would call someone a mathematician only if that was their job. I wouldn't include a lecturer in that, unless they did research or pure maths as part of that contract. I would count theoretical physicists or chemists, I would be reluctant to include actuaries and others involved in insurance/finance/economics....

Basically, if you work in pure mathematics, then you're a mathematician as far as I'm concerned, otherwise you're just some who uses or likes maths to an above average level.

The whole point is you have to actually do that job at professional level(teacher is secondary level) like how you wouldn't say someone was a Physicist unless they actually worked as a Physicist and being a Physics teacher doesn't cut it because they are only teaching up to secondary school level. If someone told me "oh my brothers a mathematician" I would expect him to be someone like Hawking getting a degree doesn't cut it you have a qualification but you don't actually do the job for a living. There is a little room for debate about whether a lot of scientists working in industry are sort of mathematicians as well but I would want them to be doing some maths research really to be a mathematician.Imagine if someone told you they were a policeman but actually jus had a Police Degree.
Not too late to start learning. Also why are random words in caps?
