How to pick a University Course- Help needed

Hello,

I've just finished year 12 and am waiting for my AS results.
I was just wondering if you had any tips for how to pick/ how you found the university course you want to do as I can never seem to find any.
The subjects I do are Biology, Chemistry, Geography and English Lit

You could drop Literature then you could do:

Pharmacy
Genetics
Neuroscience
Geology :P

There are loads of science ones :P

I read through stuff on the internet about university courses after quickly ticking and crossing out courses which are completely ruled out for me e.g.....

Obviously not all courses are there, but i felt it gave me a decent idea of what each subject is about (Eventually i decided on applying for economics after nearly applying for Law / Politics / Social policy )

Wow! You choose the same combination as me!! You can do neuroscience, teaching, marine biology, biochemistry, radiology, pretty much all science, geography based ones.

I know this thread isn't for this but could you give me any tips for these Alevels and the highs and lows of the subjects and how they link as a combination? I would really appreciate it!! (I'm starting year 12 in September)

First tip is stay organised I found folders work well. One of the lows was for the sciences I ended up having the bio and chem tests in the same week and we had a 60% pass rate in bio which was hard to get all the time. The highs well one of them was when I finished my English coursework. I also enjoyed the practicals in biology as they weren't too complex unlike some of the ones in chemistry. Geography was good as you saw how the issues we learnt about linked into the real world and I found English helped me with answering the longer questions in the exam. If you want any more tips just ask.

I found the workload hard at the beginning but I learnt to cope with it. It was quite intense but I soon got used it to it also depends on how many teachers you have per subject as I had 3 teachers for English so I had a lot of essays to write. I didn't really wished I did anything differently but one thing that is useful is to read over your notes of your last lesson before you have the lesson again as my teachers for bio and chem would sometimes test us at the beginning of the lessons. Anyway good luck!

What subject do you enjoy most? Then go from there, and if you like more than one than you could always consider doing a combined honours degree

I basically did lots of extra reading and tried to find out what I was passionate about. I think after AS you have to make a decision about the direction you want to head in - sciences or humanities, as you have 2 solid science subjects and 2 solid essay subjects too. Obviously you could look at something in science, but also the social sciences/arts- such as law, social policy etc.

If you're interested in both arts and sciences some unis like UCL do an Arts and Sciences BASc where you can mix them, and others e.g. Exeter offer a liberal arts/flexible combined honours course that allows you to choose pathways to follow.

I'd definitely have a look at the latter, especially as while investigating options you can take you might find a subject that really interests you and decide to take that instead

I experienced the same problem as you. I thought of the subject I enjoyed the most and seen courses related with that topic. I love chemistry out of all the sciences because I love science, and I realised taking a chemistry degree in the future would open a lot of option careers or master degrees. But I did look at lists of all degrees possible, careers, and I took 5 hours to actually be happy with the idea from a lot of options just taking chemistry instead of specialising in a certain area

Ahh I think it might take me a while to be happy as well. Where are you doing chemistry? As I was thinking of doing chemistry but I'm not too sure

I don't want to think about it till I finish the end of AS year haha, but I have wrote some down, highlighted the ones with a year abroad! I would love that! Where you planning on going?

I haven't decided yet as my predicted grades were low for AS so I was going to look at unis when I get my grades. However I've looked at Surrey or a Russel group uni maybe still not decided
