What's your opinion on vikings generously sharing their DNA with women all over Europe (and beyond) 1000 years or so ago? They didn't even have to pay for it back then ! Dat viking DNA :coma:

Well there isn't much source matter on the subject, but there was Viking integration into Anglo Saxon England. I doubt much of it was consensual on the part of women though, unfortunately. So if your question is whether I am happy about the fact the Vikings raped women across Europe, then no, I am not.

There were 3 students in my year, 2 women 1 man. The year below there were 4 men and 1 woman.

Sound like a mickey mouse degree. Not much in terms of transferable skills or technical knowledge gained.

It's joint history, archaeology and english degree, with a focus on medieval manuscripts and artefacts. It may not be for you but I suggest you research further into the degree itself rather than writing it off because it has the word "studies" in the title. I'm doing more than well enough for myself as a graduate (judging by this forum, better than some others by a long shot) so frankly I feel like I spent my money well. What degree did you do? Do you feel you spent your money well? Or do you just like undermining strangers on the internet to feel better about yourself in some sad lonely way?

Did I touch a nerve? LOL its an AMA at the end of the day, so i felt the question was valid.

Actuarial Science from LSE, so yes it was money well spent and I'm working at a big4 firm.

You commented with the intention of making me feel that my degree was invalid and a waste of money. So yes, I retaliated. What else did you expect?

How nice for you, you may join the realms of other actuarial science graduates who have jobs, whilst I as a Viking studies graduate also have a job. What insecurities in your own life draw you to try and undermine the achievements of others? Are you trying to feel better about yourself, or simply trying to make others feel worse about themselves? Frankly, my dear, you don't come across as a particularly pleasant person, more the opposite.

LOL its Viking studies for god sakes! have a little sense of humour! I mean out of all the options you decided to take Viking studies

On a serious note, good for you to get a job in a climate where even STEM students aren't guaranteed jobs. May I ask you what your job is?

Well if you have a specialised interest in a certain area of academia then I wouldn't cast judgement on you for studying it. Would you rather I had taken history and then not been able to study the time period I was interested in, instead having to study a load of modules about the past 300 years? Different courses exist because there is a demand for them. Interesting how the reaction to my degree is enthusiastic curiosity and outright derision, guess it tells you a lot about a person depending on what their reaction is.

I have two jobs currently, a pub/restaurant job in the evenings just to pay the bills, and a currently part time (going to full time around christmas) salaried job in the charity sector working with young people. It is demanding but rewarding. Not the pub job though, that kind of sucks, but I like money.

I think your degree sounds awesome :biggrin: Have you considered doing postgraduate here in the UK or in Norway? I know the University of Oslo gives out salaried PhDs (which works out at about 40k per year).
Your degree is awesome. I'm currently watching the Vikings series, do you reckon it as a fair reproduction of Vikings customs?

You should do a master in Archaeology or Anthropology, it would give you more depth in your subject and provide you a chance to enter the academia!

There's quite a lot of BNOCs and tossers, but I think you'd find that at a lot of unis. If you don't buy into the clubbing every week, banter type culture then there are lots of social groups of perfectly nice normal folks :smile: I was in the real ale society and rambling society, neither of them had a particularly large number of dickheads.

I'd have to do an MA in order to do a PhD. I can't afford it and wouldn't really be inclined to go down that route unless I saw a clear career at the end of it, and other than being a university lecturer I don't see what I could do with that much education.

As above, I'm not really interested in going into the academic side of things - I'd like it, but really I think it has to be your calling to take it that far. I don't want to be that person who's still at uni with no working life experience at 30 years old. Not for me. The Vikings tv series is pretty good, I'd say it's the closest reproduction in TV media for sure. The movies 13th warrior and Valhalla Rising are pretty awesome too if you like the genre.
